About Duke University Hospital:

Duke University Hospital, located in Durham, North Carolina, is renowned for its excellence in healthcare and is consistently recognized among the top hospitals in the United States. As the largest facility within Duke Health, it boasts 1,048 patient beds and 65 operating rooms, along with a wide array of diagnostic and therapeutic services, including a regional emergency/trauma center.

Unit Information:

The General Surgery & Vascular Trauma Stepdown Unit at Duke is committed to delivering outstanding care to critically ill patients. This 32-bed unit primarily serves individuals recovering from abdominal and vascular surgeries, as well as trauma cases. Our environment encourages the development of critical thinking skills while fostering teamwork and continuous learning.

Position Details:

We are seeking both new graduates and experienced nurses for this role. The work schedule includes:

  • 3 12-hour Night shifts (7pm-7am)
  • 3 12-hour Day shifts (7am-7pm)
  • 3 12-hour Rotating shifts (50% Days; 50% Nights)

Qualifications:

  • A degree in Nursing from an accredited institution is required (Bachelor's, Associate's, or Nursing Diploma).
  • For experienced nurses, a minimum of one year of clinical nursing experience is required.

Licensure and Certification:

  • Active registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse or current compact RN licensure for North Carolina.
  • BLS certification is mandatory.
  • Professional specialty certification is preferred for experienced nurses.

Skills Development:

Our unit provides a unique opportunity to enhance essential nursing skills, including:

  • Tracheostomy care and management
  • Administration of blood products
  • Wound care and management
  • Ostomy care and patient education
  • Management of chest tubes and drains
  • Post-operative monitoring and care
  • Various pain management techniques
  • Telemetry monitoring
  • Coordination of patient and family education
