The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking highly skilled and motivated individuals to join our team as Wildland Firefighters - Engine Crew Members. As a key member of our engine crew, you will play a critical role in preventing and suppressing wildfires in our nation's forests, grasslands, and other wildland areas.
Key Responsibilities- Participate in wildland fire suppression and management activities, including digging hand lines, building and patrolling firelines, and suppressing spot fires.
- Operate and maintain wildland fire equipment, including engines, pumps, and hoses.
- Assist in the preparation and implementation of wildland fire plans, including conducting risk assessments and developing contingency strategies.
- Collaborate with other team members to ensure effective communication and coordination during wildland fire operations.
- Perform physical labor in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, often in extreme weather conditions.
- Meet the minimum qualifications for the GS-03 or GS-04 level, as outlined in the job announcement.
- Have a valid state driver's license and be willing to obtain a CDL, if required.
- Pass a pre-employment physical examination and meet the medical qualification requirements for the position.
- Be able to pass a background investigation and obtain a security clearance, if required.
As a Wildland Firefighter - Engine Crew Member, you will be working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, often in extreme weather conditions. You will be required to perform physical labor, including lifting, carrying, and bending, and may be exposed to hazardous materials, smoke, and other environmental hazards. You must be able to adjust and cope with exposure to weather elements, dust, and smoke, and be willing to work in a team environment.
