Job Summary:

Williams College is seeking a skilled On-Call Art Preparator to join our art preparation team. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in all aspects of object care for temporary exhibitions and the maintenance of the permanent collection.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exhibition Installation and De-Installation: Install and de-install exhibitions, ensuring that artwork is handled and displayed with the utmost care.
  • Artwork Handling and Storage: Pack and unpack artwork from the permanent collection and on loan from other institutions, and safely move art through museum collection spaces and galleries.
  • Gallery Preparation: Prepare gallery spaces for exhibitions, including light carpentry, fabrication of display furniture, wall preparation, and painting.
  • Lighting and Fabrication: Light galleries in consultation with the chief preparator and fabricate exhibition furniture, crates, and temporary exhibition features.
  • Maintenance and Upkeep: Maintain the general upkeep of the museum galleries and collection spaces.

Requirements:

  • Physical Demands: Ability to perform physical work, including carpentry, interior painting, lifting over 50 lbs, standing for extended periods, and working at heights.
  • Collaboration and Flexibility: Flexibility, creativity, and a willingness to work collaboratively to bring the concepts of curators and artists to fruition.
  • Experience and Skills: Experience with handling artwork in a museum setting, gallery lighting, digital media technologies, and a familiarity with a range of audio-visual equipment and appropriate methods of installation.
