Position Summary:

The ideal candidate will possess the necessary qualifications and experience to instruct both introductory and advanced human biology courses, which encompass anatomy and physiology, microbiology, genetics, as well as cellular and molecular biology, within the Bachelor of Science in Biology and Biomedical programs. Additionally, the capacity to guide thesis students in a Master of Science in Biology program is highly desirable. A Ph.D. is mandatory, and additional professional certifications such as ASCP or AMt will be advantageous.


Key Responsibilities:

(90%) Teaching, Research, and Scholarship: Deliver comprehensive instruction to undergraduate and graduate students in areas including, but not limited to, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, genetics, cancer biology, biochemistry, and cellular and molecular biology, as part of the BS in Biology and Biomedical programs. Opportunities to teach advanced courses in the candidate's area of expertise may also be available.

(5%) Mentoring and Advising: Provide mentorship and advisory support to students, train and supervise research personnel at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and participate on graduate committees for other students. Supervision of technical staff may be required if grant projects are initiated.

(5%) Service Contributions: Faculty members are expected to actively engage as collaborative members of their departments and contribute to the overall effectiveness of their units, the College, and their professional fields. This includes outreach efforts to the broader community.


Qualifications:

Education & Experience:


Minimum Requirements:

A Master's or Ph.D. degree in biology or a closely related field is required, along with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in biology or a related discipline is preferred, along with postdoctoral experience. Experience or interest in collaborative work across departments and with tribal communities is highly valued. A record of successful multidisciplinary research, particularly research benefiting the Dine people, and a history of outreach with stakeholders and securing external funding is also preferred.

Knowledge:

The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong background in teaching foundational and advanced human biology courses, including anatomy and physiology, microbiology, genetics, cancer biology, biochemistry, and cellular and molecular biology. Mentoring experience for thesis students in a Master's program is highly encouraged. A Ph.D. is required, and additional certifications such as ASCP or AMt are beneficial.

Skills:

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential. Problem-solving and decision-making abilities are crucial. Oral proficiency in Navajo is highly desirable but not mandatory. While Navajo/American Indian preference is exercised, it is not a requirement. Bilingual and bi-literate candidates in Navajo are preferred but not mandatory. Faculty members should be proficient in various software applications that support higher education administration, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and internet services. Familiarity with academic-specific programs for course delivery and maintenance is expected.

Abilities:

Faculty members should possess a high level of proficiency in computer software utilized for higher education administration, including general office applications and academic-specific platforms for course delivery and maintenance.

Work Environment & Travel:

Typical hours are 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with potential for remote work. Instruction and research primarily occur indoors but may involve outdoor activities in various weather conditions. Weekend and evening work may be necessary, and travel to other campuses or research sites for outreach events is anticipated.

Other Requirements:

This position requires the ability to drive a college vehicle or personal vehicle for college-related duties; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle training and history check, maintain a valid driver's license, and self-report any convictions as per College Policy.
