Position Overview
Schedule: Weekends Only
The MRI Imaging Technician is tasked with overseeing daily operations within the MRI department. This role involves conducting Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in accordance with established protocols, collaborating closely with Radiologists and other medical professionals. Additionally, the technician plays a vital role in mentoring new staff and supervising MRI students.
Key Responsibilities
- Efficiently completes assigned duties within designated timeframes, demonstrating adaptability to varying workloads.
- Operates the magnetic resonance imaging system, including surface coils and physiologic gating devices, to achieve optimal imaging results.
- Implements magnetic resonance safety protocols to mitigate risks to patients, self, and colleagues.
- Accurately positions patients on the MRI scanning cradle, inputs necessary information, and selects appropriate scan parameters based on established protocols and physician directives.
- Administers IV injections and manages the use and maintenance of IVs, as well as administering magnetic contrast agents as required.
- Utilizes various computer functions to enhance image quality and performs quality assurance tests in line with departmental protocols.
- Exhibits proficiency in direct patient care by verifying patient identities and relevant information to ensure correct procedures are conducted; explains the imaging process to patients and prepares them by obtaining necessary histories and consent.
- Monitors patient conditions and equipment during procedures, reporting any changes to the appropriate medical personnel.
- Contributes to the education of students and the orientation of new staff members.
- Engages in performance improvement initiatives and assists the department in meeting compliance standards for audits.
- Maintains controlled access to the MRI suite and oversees quality control measures.
- Collaborates effectively with other departments and modalities.
Qualifications
Licensure/Certification:
ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) certification in Diagnostic Radiology with an Advanced MRI Registry (MR) is required, or must be obtained within one year of employment.
BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from the American Heart Association is preferred upon hire and must be acquired from an approved source prior to engaging in direct patient care.
Education:
An Associate's degree from an ARRT-accredited institution is preferred.
Experience:
A minimum of one year of experience in an MRI department within a hospital setting is preferred.
Training:
Familiarity with EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS) is preferred.
Patient Demographics:
Experience with a diverse patient population, including neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
Work Environment:
This role may involve high-stress situations and fluctuating workloads, exposure to potential hazards, and the necessity for travel to off-site locations.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform various physical tasks, including lifting, pushing, pulling, and maintaining manual dexterity.
Skills:
Strong problem-solving abilities, critical thinking skills, and a thorough understanding of medical terminology are essential. The technician must also maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to OSHA standards and universal precautions.
