Position Overview

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) residents will adhere to the same clinical and educational standards as physician residents at Smilow Cancer Hospital. The educational curriculum will be structured around an accredited oncology APRN concentration program. Residents are required to participate in weekly educational conferences and engage in various didactic activities, including journal clubs, grand rounds, tumor boards, procedure labs, and simulation training.

As part of their responsibilities, APRN residents will conduct medical histories, perform physical assessments, execute specified procedures, and collaborate with the APP/MD provider to develop patient treatment plans. The primary work location will be at Smilow Cancer Hospital, with potential rotations to Smilow Care Centers.

Key Responsibilities
  • 1. Clinical rotations will primarily occur at Smilow Cancer Hospital, with possible inclusion of Smilow Care Centers.
    - Hematology track: Involves rotations in areas such as Leukemia, Myeloma, Lymphoma, Stem Cell Transplant, and Palliative Care.
    - Medical Oncology track: Includes rotations in GYN oncology, Breast, Lung, GU, GI, and Neuro-oncology, among others.
    - Additional elective rotations may be available in specialties like Cancer Genetics, Dermatology Oncology, and Psychiatry.

    2. Residents are expected to attend weekly educational conferences and participate in various didactic offerings.
    3. Collaborate with APP/MD providers to discuss patient cases.
    4. Maintain comprehensive medical records for all patients under care.
    5. Adhere to the policies and procedures of Smilow Cancer Hospital and respective departments during rotations.
    6. Perform clinical procedures, including but not limited to bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures.
    7. Provide clinical instruction to PA students and residents.
    8. Collaborate with APP/MD providers to take medical histories and perform physical examinations.
Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

Experience: New graduates and experienced PA providers are encouraged to apply.

Licensure:
1. APRN required (licensed/eligible in the State of Connecticut).
2. Current certification by ANCC or AANP.
3. DEA License & Connecticut Controlled Substance (CSR) license.
4. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Special Skills: Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills are essential. Candidates should demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality care in alignment with the standards of Smilow Cancer Hospital.

Physical Demand: This is a 9-month postgraduate Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Oncology Fellowship designed to prepare APPs for careers in hematology and oncology. The Fellowship combines a comprehensive educational curriculum with clinical training across major hematologic and oncologic disease groups. APP Fellows will collaborate with experienced APPs, MDs, and nursing colleagues to deliver exceptional cancer care. Throughout the Fellowship, experiences will be organized around a disease-specific curriculum, with direct mentorship provided in each clinical setting. Fellows will perform history and physical examinations, formulate differential diagnoses, and develop management plans in collaboration with their clinical mentors. The clinical curriculum is based on the content offered by accredited APP programs, with a specialization in hematology and oncology. APP residents will be expected to attend weekly educational conferences and participate in various didactic offerings.
