Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Vascular Sonographer to join our team at Brigham and Women's Hospital. As a key member of our Vascular Diagnostic Laboratory, you will be responsible for performing and documenting vascular ultrasound procedures, greeting and assisting patients, and promoting the appropriate use of laboratory services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review patient charts and previous examinations to ensure the correct procedure is ordered and assess the patient's ability to undergo the procedure.
  • Comply with medical history and explain the procedure to the patient.
  • Perform non-invasive peripheral vascular ultrasound procedures efficiently and accurately, following all documented protocols.
  • Adhere to hospital infection control guidelines at all times.
  • Modify standard ultrasound techniques as necessary and inform the physician of any modifications.
  • Input concise preliminary reports to the hospital computer system and review results to determine if notification of the referring physician is required.
  • Assist surgeons in clinic varicose vein procedures and work with medical and nursing staff to promote the appropriate use of laboratory services.
  • Maintain knowledge of vascular ultrasound technology by attending meetings and reading relevant journals.
  • Participate in on-call coverage and overtime programs as needed.
Qualifications
  • RVT or RVT eligible certification from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
  • BS in biological sciences, BA, or equivalent experience, or AS in a healthcare-related field (Nursing, Rad Tech).
  • Certified in CPR.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to effectively operate sonographic equipment and use independent judgment to acquire diagnostic sonographic information.
  • Ability to integrate diagnostic sonograms, laboratory results, patient history, and medical records to adapt sonographic examinations as necessary.
  • Ability to evaluate sonograms to acquire diagnostic information and communicate with the ordering physician.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and the healthcare team, recognizing the special nature of sonographic examinations and patient needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and healthcare team.
  • Ability to follow established departmental procedures and exercise independent judgment with respect to continued learning to advance clinical acumen.
  • Ability to work efficiently under stress and pressure and cope with emergency situations.
  • Ability to interact with patients of all kinds.
Working Conditions

The job may be stressful on busy days, and some exposure to infectious diseases is possible. However, actual incidence of infection is low if infection control guidelines are followed. Portable examinations will be performed when required, and emotional and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position are necessary.
