Your Impact
In the capacity of a Lead Principal Software Engineer for PayPal's Payments Engineering division, you will take on the role of a senior engineer and subject matter expert for the Payments Platform Engineering team. You will engage with one of the largest payment platforms, catering to millions of active users and handling substantial transaction volumes. Our organization is characterized by rapid growth and a commitment to solving technical challenges at an exponential scale, with a strong culture of accountability and timely delivery.

Daily Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering initiatives and team processes by defining outcomes, refining ongoing methodologies, and offering technical counsel to senior leadership regarding systems, solutions, challenges, and strategic direction.
  • Oversee the complete ownership of design, implementation, and operational excellence of software components while proactively enhancing existing structures and processes.
  • Contribute to the technical engineering roadmap by conducting thorough assessments of implementation alternatives and their associated trade-offs, providing informed recommendations.
  • Provide technical guidance for a small team with minimal oversight from management or senior colleagues.
  • Design, estimate, and implement new and refactored software services on the platform with a focus on security, reliability, and scalability. Take responsibility for the quality of design and implementation of software components.
  • Deliver high-quality code punctually while adhering to our Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) process.
  • Ensure the performance and availability of services, participate in on-call rotations, and provide support during incidents.
  • Exhibit a willingness to learn and contribute to complex projects alongside peers.
  • Engage in code reviews.
  • Collaborate with various non-engineering teams, including product management, support, finance operations, compliance, and legal.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Over 10 years of experience with Python or a comparable high-level programming language.
  • Advanced proficiency with RDBMS and NoSQL data stores, caching solutions (e.g., Redis, ElastiCache, Hazelcast), and messaging/queuing protocols/systems such as SQS/Kafka/RabbitMQ/Pulsar.
  • Ability to lead projects and mentor engineers at all levels, while managing relationships with Product, Engineering Operations, and non-technical business and support teams.
  • Expertise in distributed services and backend systems.
  • Proficient in building services on public cloud platforms – AWS, GCP, Azure.
  • Experience in managing infrastructure as code using Terraform.
  • Experience working with fault-tolerant and scalable distributed services and systems.
