Job Summary

The Circulating Nurse - Surgical is responsible for addressing the psychosocial, physical, and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment. This role requires effective communication with the surgeon and anesthesiologist to ensure patient safety and comfort. The successful candidate will be able to assess the operating room for equipment functioning and readiness, obtain supplies for individual cases, and ensure all necessary needs of the surgical team are met.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure the Pre-op Checklist is complete before the patient is taken into the surgical suite.
  • Provide patient explanations and verbal reassurances consistently.
  • Be consistently ready and prepared for assigned cases, with the patient in the holding area 30 minutes before the scheduled time.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of anesthetic drugs, actions, and side effects.
  • Carry out established techniques for safe administration of medications and fluids, as per hospital policies and procedures.
  • Protect patient sensitivities and right to privacy.
  • Position patients safely, pad, and protect bony prominences.
  • Prep and drape patients correctly for all procedures.
  • Carry out medical and surgical asepsis during all procedures.
  • Direct and assist in maintenance and handling of special equipment and instruments.
  • Adapt nursing procedures to meet the needs for treatment of individual pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Identify physical symptoms and changes and take appropriate actions in a timely manner.
  • Assessment and reassessment of the patient is clearly and concisely communicated in charting.
  • Effectively communicate with the physician in accounting for all sponges, needles, and instruments during and after the procedure and document in the appropriate area.
  • Communicate Clinical Laboratory/Imaging Services reports to the surgeon during the procedure.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and good working relationships with coworkers for the patient's benefit.
  • Give thorough report of patient's intra-operative condition to PACU nurse.
  • Be able to open sterile supplies and set up for procedure.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of location, care, and operation of all surgical equipment.
  • Accurately record, handle, and label specimens.
  • Demonstrate competence in preparing and cleaning of OR suites before and between cases and after terminal case, based on patient's infection class.
  • Perform time-out prior to start of surgical case.
  • Revises the physicians preference cards and communicates changes to appropriate personnel.
  • Will rotate with taking on-call.
  • There will be situations where employee will have to stay late to complete a case.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Texas.
  • Minimum of one (1) year work experience in the operating room.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliation to keep abreast of the latest trends in the field of expertise.
  • Completes annual educational requirements.
  • Maintains and demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the population served.
Language/MATH/REASONING ABILITY
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills
  • Basic computer skills.
CERTIFICATE/LICENSES
  • BLS.
  • ACLS will need to be obtained within 30 days of DOH.
