Position Summary
Under the general guidance of the Branch Manager, the Youth Services Coordinator plays a pivotal role in delivering reference and readers' advisory services tailored for the youth demographic. This position encompasses the organization of story hours, development of children's and teen programs, and providing exceptional customer service to young patrons and their guardians. The Coordinator is also responsible for advocating library services within educational institutions and spearheading projects aimed at fostering engaging and creative educational experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver outstanding customer service and library assistance to meet the informational needs of the community, particularly focusing on youth aged 0-18.
- Promote library collections and services to the public, both within the library and through outreach initiatives.
- Design, implement, and assess library programs for youth, their parents, and professionals working with children.
- Assist patrons in navigating print and digital resources effectively.
- Guide and refer patrons to additional information sources as necessary.
- Create engaging displays of library materials to enhance the user experience and encourage resource utilization.
- Independently evaluate current services and programs, making necessary adjustments to better serve patron needs.
- Provide readers' advisory services to youth and families, assisting in the selection of suitable materials.
- Collaborate with Outreach initiatives to promote library services through visits to local educational and childcare facilities.
- Address patron inquiries and resolve conflicts, with support from library management.
- Assist in securing and managing grant funding for youth services.
- Prepare informative materials such as bibliographies and pathfinders.
- Engage in professional development and training opportunities.
- Supervise youth services staff as required.
- Act as the point of contact in the absence of the Branch Manager.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of the library collection.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: A Master's Degree in Library and Information Science or a related field is required, along with two years of relevant experience in library services or a related area.
Additional Requirements: Familiarity with the PINES system is advantageous. Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
Licenses or Certifications: A valid driver's license and insurability are mandatory.
Special Requirements: Flexibility in scheduling is essential, including availability for evenings and weekends.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Demonstrated creativity, intelligence, and a collaborative spirit.
- Understanding of library operations and youth services trends.
- Familiarity with youth literature and reference sources.
- Strong planning and communication abilities.
- Competence in using standard office and audio-visual equipment, as well as software for creating promotional materials.
Physical Demands: The role involves sitting, standing, and moving about the library. Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform various physical tasks related to library operations.
Work Environment: The position is primarily office/library-based, with potential fluctuations in temperature and occasional stress due to high-volume periods.
