Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

This role provides breastfeeding education and support to participants of the WIC program. The ideal candidate will have exclusively breastfed for a minimum of 6 months and have previous or current enrollment in the WIC program.

• Provide basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including advising them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and helping them prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
• Counsel WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone or in person at the WIC office, respecting each mother's confidentiality.
• Keep accurate records of all contacts made with WIC mothers in the WIC computer system.
• Refer mothers as appropriate to WIC nutritionists, Lactation Consultants, mothers' physicians or nurses, public health programs in the community, and social service agencies as needed.
• Teach breastfeeding classes for pregnant and postpartum mothers and lead breastfeeding support groups.
• Attend staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate.
• Read assigned books and materials on breastfeeding provided by the supervisor.

• High school diploma or GED.
• Past or current WIC participant, with a minimum of 1 year of experience preferred.
• Exclusively breastfed for a minimum of 6 months.
• Fluent in English and Spanish.
• Excellent written and telephone communication skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Suite programs, particularly Excel.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team and provide excellent customer service to diverse populations.
• Ability to remain calm and exercise judgment in unusual or stressful situations.
• Enthusiasm about nursing and a desire to help other parents enjoy a positive breastfeeding experience.
• Community-oriented and dependable.
• People-oriented and detail-oriented.
