Position Overview

Employees in this role adhere to established protocols while performing semi-skilled to skilled labor associated with various water system construction and maintenance tasks. The work encompasses a range of activities, from routine operations to those requiring more advanced tools and machinery. Instructions may be conveyed verbally or in writing. Simpler tasks can be executed with a degree of independence, while more intricate assignments are carried out under the direct oversight of a skilled technician. Work is subject to inspection throughout its progress and upon completion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

(The following duties may not be included in every position, nor does this list encompass all tasks associated with this role.)
  • Ensures a safe working environment.
  • Installs pipes, concrete, rocks, and other materials utilized in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water mains, service lines, meters, and related components.
  • Performs painting on various structures and engages in a variety of other semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Services, cleans, and maintains vehicles, tools, and equipment as required.
  • Maintains the landscaping and lawns of the Water Department.
  • Undertakes additional duties as necessary.
  • Operates trucks and other vehicles for light hauling tasks.
  • Utilizes tractors and other smaller equipment as needed.
  • Responds to after-hours calls for water outages or repairs as necessary.
  • Repairs and/or replaces asphalt, concrete, landscaping, and other hardscapes as required following water system repairs.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to graduation from a standard high school with extensive experience in industrial construction.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • Familiarity with the use and maintenance of various hand tools and basic machinery.
  • Understanding of the routine phases of a skilled trade such as bridge or building construction.
  • Ability to effectively use a variety of hand tools.
  • Capability to operate light machinery and mid-size vehicles.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while maintaining efficiency and accuracy in job performance.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow simple written and oral instructions.
Other Requirements

Physical Requirements
  • Must be physically capable of performing strenuous manual labor in adverse weather conditions and be available for on-call duties as needed.
  • Must possess adequate vision to operate motor vehicles and light machinery.
  • Must have sufficient hearing ability to communicate with coworkers and supervisors, both via radio and in person.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
Certifications or Licenses Required
  • Must hold a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (or obtain within six months of employment) and be insurable by the Madison County Commission's risk underwriters.
  • Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) will be obtained and reviewed annually.
  • Must pass a DOT Commercial Driver's physical and drug screening.
  • Must be registered for the FMCSA DOT Clearinghouse if you possess a CDL License.
Work Schedule
  • 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Monday - Friday
