Position Highlights:

  • Unit Capacity: 30 beds
  • Patient Demographics: 18 years and older
  • Nurse to Patient Ratio: 4-6 patients per RN
  • Department culture and resources: Support from the Oncology Nursing Society, educational resources, Active Department Shared Governance, and a Mentor/Mentee Program for New Graduates and those pursuing Oncology Nursing Certification.
  • Common Nursing Skills/Equipment Utilized: Oncology skill set (inpatient chemotherapy and radiation), palliative care, end-of-life care, and general medical patients.

Qualifications:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Diploma (Not HS) in Nursing

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Registered Professional Nurse (RN) License in Illinois upon hire and Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Certification if administering chemotherapy within 1 year.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of all required continuing education related to the care of acute stroke patients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute all responsibilities and duties specific to the unit's scope of service. Implement procedures and theories pertinent to the area of practice. Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of nursing care provided to ensure integration of information for the healthcare team.
  • Conduct initial assessments upon patient admission and develop an appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards, tailored to patient and family needs. Implement the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. Adjust the plan of care based on ongoing evaluations.
  • Ensure patient and employee safety by reporting and/or rectifying safety hazards and incidents.
  • Communicate effectively with others directly and privately when necessary to resolve issues. Provide constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers and collaborate with colleagues to enhance knowledge.
  • Fulfill all departmental competency requirements.
  • Perform essential patient care duties, including head-to-toe assessments, initiating IVs, inserting NG tubes, changing dressings, administering medications, and inserting Foley catheters.
  • Access and maintain Mediports throughout the shift.
  • Adhere to documentation standards as evidenced by successful quarterly chart audits.
  • Offer emotional support to patients and their families.
  • Administer Chemotherapy/Biotherapy to patients not only on the Oncology unit but also throughout the healthcare facility.
