Position Overview

The Outpatient Registered Nurse (RN) is an essential role within the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP), serving as an entry-level position. This role is crucial for delivering and coordinating competent clinical care, which encompasses assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for a designated patient group. The RN may delegate appropriate tasks to direct patient care staff, including RNs, LVNs/LPNs, and Patient Care Technicians. As a vital member of the End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) healthcare team, the RN engages in decision-making, educational initiatives, leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts aimed at enhancing patient care outcomes and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

All responsibilities are to be executed in alignment with company policies, nursing standards, and relevant regulations:
  • Carry out essential functions under the supervision of the Team Leader, with support from Clinical Educators or in collaboration with fellow Registered Nurses.
  • Conduct systematic collection and analysis of patient data before, during, and after hemodialysis treatment, documenting findings in the patient medical record and making necessary adjustments to treatment plans.
  • Evaluate and document the educational needs of patients and families to provide both initial and ongoing education.
  • Collaborate with patient care staff to ensure the safe and effective delivery of hemodialysis therapy.
  • Administer prescribed medications and document their effectiveness and justification.
  • Participate in emergency response initiatives as needed.
  • Act as a resource for the healthcare team and assist in training and orienting new staff.
  • Ensure proper laboratory procedures are followed and reschedule any missed or insufficient collections.
  • Identify expected patient outcomes and update nursing assessments and care plans in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Team.
  • Facilitate patient understanding of transplant and treatment options.
  • Complete CAP requirements for advancement.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Direct patient care involves significant physical activity, including heavy lifting and patient mobility assistance.
  • Frequent prolonged standing and the ability to bend are required.
  • Occasional movement of equipment weighing up to 200 lbs. may be necessary, along with lifting chemical solutions up to 30 lbs.
  • The work environment is typical of a healthcare facility, featuring controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels.
  • Exposure to infectious materials may occur.
  • Daily responsibilities include desk work, computer usage, and interaction with patients and healthcare staff.
  • Travel to training sites or other facilities may be required.
  • Employees must take the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment, with accommodations considered if necessary.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Oversight of Patient Care Technicians/LPNs/LVNs/RNs may be assigned after fulfilling the following criteria:
  • Completion of all required education and training for new employees.
  • A minimum of 9 months of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • A minimum of 3 months of experience in chronic/acute hemodialysis as a Registered Nurse.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current or successful completion of CPR BLS Certification.
  • Compliance with practice requirements in the state of employment.

Experience and Skills

  • Entry-level position for RNs with less than 1 year of Nephrology Nursing experience in the past two years.
  • Preferred minimum of 9 months of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Preferred experience in chronic/acute hemodialysis.
