Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Fleet Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring the operational efficiency of diesel-powered vehicles by performing comprehensive inspections and preventive maintenance. This role involves diagnosing and rectifying mechanical issues, making necessary adjustments, and maintaining accurate records of service and repairs. The technician will handle major servicing and repairs across various mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic systems within the fleet. The position may require fieldwork in diverse weather conditions, and the ideal candidate should exhibit self-motivation and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical issues for a fleet of trucks.
  • Conduct troubleshooting and repairs on ignition, fuel, hydraulic, lighting, and electrical systems.
  • Overhaul engines, transmissions, differentials, and hydraulic components.
  • Maintain detailed service and repair logs.
  • Repair and service tools and machinery.
  • Prepare work orders and procure necessary parts.
  • Perform emergency repairs on-site as required.
  • Execute repairs safely in adverse weather conditions when necessary.
  • Assess vehicle and equipment conditions through inspections and diagnostics.
  • Ensure equipment availability by adhering to preventive maintenance schedules and implementing upgrades.
  • Correct deficiencies by disassembling, repairing, and reassembling major vehicle systems.
  • Verify vehicle performance through test drives and system adjustments.
  • Adhere to federal and state vehicle regulations.
  • Document vehicle maintenance and repairs accurately.
  • Maintain shop equipment by following operational guidelines and performing preventive maintenance.
  • Manage costs effectively by utilizing warranties and evaluating service options.
  • Ensure inventory levels are maintained and supplies are ordered as needed.
  • Enhance job knowledge through continuous education and review of technical publications.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a diesel mechanic (preferred).
  • At least 3 years of basic mechanical experience (preferred).
  • Experience with Horizontal Directional Drilling Rig (3 years preferred).
  • Experience operating Excavators (3 years preferred).

Reporting Structure:

Reports directly to the Fleet Manager.

Workflow Expectations:

  • Receive assignments from Shop Supervisor and provide feedback on vehicle downtime.
  • Ensure all necessary tools and equipment are available for assigned tasks.
  • Coordinate labor and equipment to optimize efficiency.
  • Submit timely and accurate reports including Time Sheets and Production Reports.
  • Maintain strict quality control and cleanliness in the workspace.
  • Review completed work with the Shop Supervisor.

Production Reporting:

  • Ensure timely completion of Production Reports, Time Sheets, Expense Reports, and Purchase Orders.
  • Approve documentation before submission.
