Senior Chemist Job Description

At GE Appliances, we're driven by a passion for innovation and a commitment to excellence. As a Senior Chemist, you'll play a critical role in supporting our business by providing technical leadership in chemical analysis, material selection, and evaluation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical expertise in chemical analysis, supporting material selection and evaluation.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to offer chemical analysis and material selection support during product design and development.
  • Perform failure analysis on parts from reliability testing and field failures.
  • Conduct competitive material analysis.
  • Support plant and quality issues related to chemical analysis.
  • Assist EHS with the management of the lab chemical hygiene plan.
  • Stay up-to-date with related technologies and their applications in the appliances industry to maintain the chemistry lab's state-of-the-art status.
  • Develop new test/evaluation methods and improve analysis capabilities to support design team needs.
  • Troubleshoot laboratory equipment and maintain the chemistry laboratory.
Requirements:
  • MS/PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science, or 5 years of industry experience in chemical analysis related to material selection, failure analysis, water chemistry, paints/coating, polymer/elastomers, and corrosion.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with various chemical analysis tools and instrumentation such as FTIR, DSC, TGA, XRF, Karl Fisher, etc.
  • Strong expertise in various chromatography techniques (GC, LC, and IC).
  • Good understanding of corrosion-related chemistry analysis, expertise in chemical analysis of polymers, elastomers, and adhesives, as well as understanding of paint and coating chemistry.
  • Knowledge of microscopy and wet chemistry techniques.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills with a passion for learning and teaching.
  • Self-starting leader with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of proper safe handling/disposal of chemicals and ability to maintain a clean and safe workspace.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Good knowledge of refrigerant system chemistry.
  • Product knowledge of various home appliances.
  • Six Sigma Green/Black Belt and/or statistical data analysis skills.
  • Good knowledge of chemistry related to water filtration.
  • Good understanding of material regulations such as Toxicity, RoHS, and REACH.
