Unit Information:
Department: Medical Psych | RN
- Unit: Medical Psych Canyon View RN
- Number of Beds: 28, with a majority being dual occupancy. When a patient cannot have a roommate, one bed is blocked. There are 2 restraint rooms available. The average daily census is 15-16.
- Nurse to Patient Ratios: 1:07
- Required Certifications: BLS, MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior) or CPI preferred, along with an enhanced background check.
- Patient Populations/Common Diagnoses: Includes suicidal ideation, depression, psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and detox from alcohol and opioids. Patients must be medically stable enough to not require IVs. Acute and lower acuity patients share common hallways due to the facility layout. Patients aged 18 and up are accepted if they can be safely admitted and medically cleared in the ER prior to admission. The unit accepts patients from various ERs across the state and surrounding areas.
- Experience or 'Must Have' Skills: A minimum of 1 year of experience is required. Preference is given to RNs and psychiatric technicians with relevant past experience, although this is not mandatory due to the comprehensive training provided in-house.
- EMR System: EPIC
- IV Administration: Not applicable on this unit.
- Charge Nurse & House Supervisor: A Charge RN is present 24 hours a day to handle admissions and will only take patients when staffing requires.
- Use of Physical Restraints: Awareness of their use is desired, although they are rarely employed. Verbal de-escalation is prioritized, with chemical, seclusion, 4-point, and hands-on methods used as necessary.
- Support Staff: Psychiatric Technician I provides 15-minute checks, toiletries, meal monitoring, and assists with restraints when required. Psychiatric Technicians II (Activity Therapists overseen by Occupational Therapy) support all Psych Tech I duties and provide activity groups.
- Respiratory Therapy: Not available on the unit. CPAP and supplemental O2 at night are monitored by nursing staff. Patients requiring O2 during the day are not accepted.
- Telemetry/Monitor Techs: Not available on the unit. EKGs, if ordered, will be read by the Cardiology team, primarily used prior to starting medications when necessary. Symptomatic patients are transferred to the ED for cardiac evaluation.
- Scheduling: 12-hour shifts from 7 AM to 7 PM. The scheduler will create the schedule, aiming to accommodate requests as much as possible. Additional shifts or overtime are not available.
- Weekend Requirements: Every other weekend, with potential for more if needed.
- Holiday Requirements: Holidays may be required based on staffing needs.
- Call or Standby Requirement: None
- Floating Requirements: May be floated to another facility if census is low to provide 1:1 staffing.
- Dress Code: Navy Blue scrubs.
- Orientation: 2 shifts on the floor in addition to general orientation.
Note: This facility has a radius rule of 50 miles. Candidates' permanent addresses will be required to ensure compliance with this rule.
