Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled professional to lead our Safety and Security department as Vice President of Safety, Security, and Training. This is a critical role that requires a strong background in safety, security, and emergency management, as well as excellent leadership and management skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement integrated safety, security, emergency management, and training programs and policies.
  • Manage and oversee all programs, policy implementation, staff functions, and operations of the department.
  • Interface with executive leadership and employees at all levels to formulate VIA's specific training program that meets the needs of VIA and its operating employees.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate department activities, working collaboratively with internal customers.
  • Develop and implement company-wide and department policies and procedures to assure consistency with good business practices, applicable policies, and Federal, State, and local regulations.
  • Develop leadership talent and other skills in subordinates through example, guidance, training, and delegation.
  • Foster teamwork both within and across departments, improving communication channels and increasing company efficiency and effectiveness by conducting integrated training and development programs that have a customer service focus.
  • Staff, discipline, counsel, and monitor department personnel.
  • Establish and implement controls to assure compliance with department and company goals, budget, quality standards, performance standards, and legal requirements.
  • Demonstrate leadership among peers and subordinates by breaking down barriers, establishing consensus, and building support for common goals.
  • Conduct long and short-range planning for the division.
  • Maintain liaisons with individuals both inside and outside of VIA.
  • Develop and maintain a timely and accurate reporting system designed to keep the President/CEO and Deputy CEO informed of department progress on achieving targets and program goals.
  • Comply with all requirements imposed by the President/CEO, Deputy CEO, and Board of Trustees in an efficient and professional manner.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in a field related to Safety, Security, Training, and/or Emergency Management or in Business Administration.
  • 12 years of experience in progressively responsible positions to provide an adequate background in Safety, Security, and/or Emergency Management functions; and in the management of training programs for various employee levels or other adult education programs, or an acceptably balanced combination, preferably in a multi-modal mass transit property.
  • 3 years of experience in a senior management position.
  • Ability to read and understand complex material.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with other employees in identifying and resolving training-related problems and issues.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize projects, as well as delegate job duties to subordinates.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions.
  • Integrity and discretion in all areas, especially in dealing with confidential matters.
  • Financial responsibility.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Planning and organizing.
  • Ability to change/be flexible.
  • Accepting responsibility for problems and for the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Being proactive.
  • Basing decisions on the welfare of VIA as a whole, considering the needs of each department.
  • Time management.
Physical Requirements

Physical ability required to be mobile, bend, stoop, reach, and lift objects weighing 5-25 pounds such as files, supplies, equipment, and large heavy reference manuals and books.

Work Environments

Works in a normal office environment. Work involves deadlines and multiple priorities. Requires irregular hours.
