SECTION 1:
Job Overview
As a Mohs Technician, you will play a crucial role in the Mohs surgical process, a specialized technique utilized for the detection and treatment of skin malignancies. Your duties will encompass preparing surgical environments, assisting patients, and supporting the surgeon throughout the operation. Training will be provided for both novice and seasoned Mohs Medical Assistants.
Your role will also involve facilitating the diagnostic assessment of tissue samples through histological methods, adhering to the protocols established by the histology and Mohs laboratory settings.
SECTION 2:
Responsibilities and Duties
- Conduct a range of specialized histopathological tasks.
- High Complexity Testing entails: Receiving fresh, unfixed specimens during tissue extraction, mapping, grossing, sectioning, applying ink, and performing relax cuts and scoring as necessary.
- Non-High Complexity Testing includes: Embedding, cryotomy, staining, and coverslipping.
- Perform immunohistochemistry staining where applicable.
HIGH COMPLEXITY TESTING:
- Specimen Collection/Triage: Accept surgical lab samples from patients for analysis. Confirm correct specimen orientation for mapping.
Verify patient mapping details:
Name, accession number, stage, tumor location, and diagnosis.
- Specimen preparation: Ensure accurate specimen identification and orientation. Segment specimens for processing as indicated on the map. Apply color-coded ink for margin orientation. Execute relax cuts and scores on tissue specimens as needed. Position specimens on embedding slides for processing.
HIGH COMPLEXITY TESTING:
- Embedding: Correctly orient specimens on glass slides using the reverse slide mount method for embedding. Freeze specimens to glass slides, ensuring proper placement for a comprehensive representative section. Once frozen, invert specimens onto prepared object holder discs.
- Microtomy (Cutting): Operate a microtome within a cryostat, ensuring correct settings and alignments for optimal cutting. Verify block orientation for proper specimen facing. Adequately trim specimen blocks to ensure a true first margin.
- Routine Staining Procedures: Select appropriate stains and chemicals for H&E or TBlue staining processes. Prepare and maintain necessary stains and solutions. Demonstrate the ability to identify acceptable and unacceptable staining outcomes.
- Mounting Procedure: Slides are hand cover slipped using a xylene-compatible mounting medium.
- Prepare specimens for Permanent Paraffin processing: Process routine excisions as a 'Slow Mohs' - non-frozen tissue. Thaw and submit previously frozen section tissue for permanent paraffin processing.
- Instrumentation: Maintain and service instruments according to established protocols. Demonstrate the ability to operate instruments effectively. Monitor and document instrument performance, recognizing malfunctions and identifying repair needs.
- Reagent Preparation: Prepare reagents per established procedures and record quality control data. Ensure proper storage and preservation of all reagents, recognizing when replacements are necessary.
- General Safety: Adhere to safety practices as defined in established protocols. Identify and rectify hazardous situations related to job safety. Investigate and resolve complaints or refer unusual issues to superiors. Comply with all safety regulations.
- Chemical Hygiene/Biohazard Procedures: Properly handle chemicals and biohazard materials, adhering to safety regulations and universal precautions.
- General: Engage in department or unit Quality Improvement activities. Assist with housekeeping duties in the Mohs Laboratory. Maintain laboratory log books.
- Evaluate new procedures and equipment for potential adoption in the laboratory.
- Conduct quality control procedures on equipment and maintain proper records.
- Prepare slides with permanent labels and file them appropriately.
- Maintain Mohs/Excision logbooks.
- Adhere to all safety policies while promoting a culture of high quality and excellent customer service.
- Perform additional duties as necessary for the organization.

- A minimum of one year of experience in a medical office is required.
