Position Overview:
As a Traffic Safety Evaluator Trainee, you will engage in various responsibilities under close supervision, including:

Document Review:
Assess and analyze legal documents or related materials to make informed decisions regarding the issuance of driving and/or regulated business license suspensions, revocations, cancellations, terminations, approvals, restorations, and/or driving or instructor/examiner credentials.

Application Evaluation:
Review and determine the eligibility of applications that indicate a problematic driving history, criminal records, or specific physical or mental case documentation. This includes record retrieval and the preparation of written communications.

Interviews:
Conduct in-person or telephone interviews to effectively address and process driver improvement and other regulated individual and business cases.

Data Management:
Implement decisions from departmental hearings and utilize computer systems to search and manage records. Review and interpret records, enter data, and prepare correspondence.

Fee Processing:
May involve receiving and processing fees as part of the application and evaluation process.

Eligibility Requirements:
To qualify for the Traffic Safety Evaluator, G-11 or Trainee, G-NS (equated to G-9) position, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Traffic Safety Evaluator, G-11:
    Two years of full-time experience in a role involving customer service, which may include telephone experience in a call center environment, providing information about programs/services, policies, and procedures; obtaining detailed information from clients; resolving issues or reconciling accounts; or two years of full-time experience in a position involving data entry, application processing, or business office tasks.
  • Substitution:
    30 semester credit hours may substitute for one year of experience, and 60 semester credit hours may substitute for two years of experience.
  • Traffic Safety Evaluator Trainee, G-NS (Equated to G-9):
    One year of full-time experience in a customer service role, which may include telephone experience in a call center environment, providing information about programs/services, policies, and procedures; obtaining detailed information from clients; resolving issues or reconciling accounts; or one year of full-time experience in a position involving data entry, application processing, or business office tasks.
  • Substitution:
    30 semester credit hours may substitute for one year of experience.

Advanced Placement:
Advanced placement for this title may be possible with proof of relevant professional experience, which can be discussed during the interview process.

Program Information:
This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, meaning no examination is required, but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the title they are applying for.

It is anticipated that employees hired under NY HELPS will transition to competitive employment within a year of their permanent appointment.
