JOB GOAL:


The Language and Communication Specialist evaluates, diagnoses, and provides intervention for students experiencing language disorders, language-based learning challenges, and speech impairments, tailored to each student's needs.

This role involves collaboration with educational team members regarding the student’s assessment, treatment strategies, and progress updates.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Designs and delivers both individual and group therapy sessions focused on speech and language development.
  • Implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with identified language and speech challenges.
  • Conducts assessments of students with speech or language impairments utilizing appropriate evaluation tools, documentation, and consultations with parents and teachers.
  • Identifies and refers students suspected of having disabilities as per federal guidelines.
  • Maintains comprehensive records for each student and prepares detailed reports on their communication challenges and progress.
  • Offers guidance and support to parents, students, educators, and treatment teams regarding speech and language issues.
  • Participates in school committees for Admissions, Review, and Dismissal, contributing to the communication and speech components of IEPs.
  • Collaborates with classroom staff to develop and enhance speech improvement initiatives within the classroom environment.
  • Engages in professional development and contributes to program and staff enhancement activities.
  • Serves on committees as required.
  • Participates in relevant professional development opportunities.
  • Strives to align instructional practices with the district's philosophy of special education and the individual educational goals of students.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:


As outlined in the agreement between the Kent County Educational Support Personnel Association and the Board of Education.

This is a ten (10) month position.

SALARY LANE:
Teacher's Lane. Salary step determined by the Superintendent.

BARGAINING UNIT:
Kent County Educational Support Personnel Association.

FLSA STATUS:
Exempt.

EVALUATION:


Performance in this role will be assessed according to the Board's evaluation policies for support personnel.
