POLICE CADET

(Part-Time Temporary Role for Up to 12 Months)

Compensation: $16.50 - $18.00 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY

The Police Cadet Internship aims to provide residents of the Oakland Housing Authority with a valuable work experience opportunity for a duration of up to 12 months. This internship is designed to equip residents with practical training in various clerical and some paraprofessional tasks within the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department, as well as across different departments of the Authority. Cadets will serve as assistants to staff while gaining hands-on experience.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Age Requirement: Candidates must be at least 17.5 years old and no older than 20.5 years at the time of application.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED with a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • Enrollment: Must be currently enrolled in a college or trade school with a minimum course load of 12 units or equivalent.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Applicants who meet the program requirements will be invited to participate in an oral examination. A list of qualified candidates will be created, followed by interviews. Several candidates will be selected for internship positions.


As a Cadet, you will be classified as a temporary employee, working no more than 20 hours per week. Part-time employees are not entitled to holiday pay, vacation leave, health benefits, retirement benefits, or life insurance. Part-time employees are allowed up to three (3) sick days per year.

Upon successful completion of the program, Cadets may be considered for re-assignment, promotion, or other entry-level opportunities within the Authority. This role also provides valuable experience and skills necessary for pursuing future employment in both public and private sectors.

Verification of college degrees or units required for the position will occur prior to final appointment. If verification cannot be completed, the candidate's name will not be placed on the List of Qualifiers. All appointments are subject to the approval of the Executive Director.

All prospective employees must successfully pass a physical examination and drug screening conducted by an Authority-designated physician. A pre-employment criminal history background check will also be performed for all positions. For roles requiring the use of an Authority vehicle, candidates' driving records will be reviewed prior to appointment. To qualify for appointment, candidates must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and maintain a driving record acceptable to the Authority's insurer. Proof of American citizenship or legal resident status and the legal right to work in the United States is also required.
