Nursing Assistant Job Description

Nemours Foundation is seeking a skilled Nursing Assistant to join our team on the 3 West floor. This is a full-time position, requiring 60 hours of work per biweekly period, with rotating shifts and every third weekend and every other holiday.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist with general activities of the patient care unit and support the healthcare team in performing patient care activities under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Ensure an adequate stock of necessary equipment and supplies in designated areas at established par levels.
  • Maintain a clean and safe patient care unit.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily life, such as bathing, feeding, and playing, and provide other patient care as directed.
  • Support other staff in examination or treatment procedures, including positioning, holding, and comforting patients.
  • Accurately charge all supplies.
  • Communicate with pharmacy, dietary, and other departments as designated by the Registered Nurse.
  • Collect patient specimens, prioritizing patient safety, comfort, and accuracy of information.
  • Utilize Hospital Information Systems as required for patient care, including documenting vital signs and patient care activities.
  • Relay information from physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel, and others accurately.
  • Transport patients and deliver reports, supplies, and other materials to other patient units or Nemours Foundation locations as needed.
  • Transport medications from the pharmacy or pneumatic tube system to licensed personnel in the patient care area for immediate patient use or storage in the Medication Room.
  • Promote patient safety and participate in activities that adhere to patient safety standards and procedures.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain confidentiality.
  • Courteously and professionally cover the patient care unit front desk as needed, including answering telephones, greeting patients, sending reports, distributing, sorting, or processing mail, entering orders, managing medical records, and other tasks.
  • Participate in departmental and hospital programs for Quality Assessment and Improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services, making recommendations, and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Nemours Foundation.
  • Participate in unit, departmental, and hospital education programs.
  • Attend unit and departmental meetings regularly.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in caring for patients of all ages, including neonates, infants, toddlers, school-aged children, adolescents, and adults.
Requirements:
  • American Heart Association BLS certification is required.
  • A minimum of 1 year of patient care experience is preferred.
  • Able to read and write accurately.
  • Able to understand laboratory orders, computer information, and some medical terminology.
  • Able to obtain specimens, including blood specimens, from a patient population that is primarily pediatric and often ill, handicapped, or restricted in some way.
