Overview

Under the direct supervision of a Civil Engineer within the Water Ways Control Division, this role is responsible for overseeing and managing the operation of high voltage electrical transmission systems that interface with public utility providers.

Key Responsibilities

The essential duties outlined below represent the core functions of this position. While not exhaustive, they provide a clear understanding of the role's primary responsibilities:

Facilitates the effective interchange of electrical power between public utilities and the District by maintaining communication with utility Load Dispatchers and operational staff at District facilities. Provides comprehensive instructions to operational teams to ensure the safe management and control of high voltage lines and associated equipment. Keeps meticulous records of Holds and issues Holds and clearances on lines and equipment in collaboration with operational personnel and public utility Dispatchers. Issues directives to manage load distribution on lines and equipment to avert overloading or to redistribute loads in the event of equipment failure. Maintains detailed documentation of operations, load statistics, interruption reports, accident reports, and environmental factors impacting District operations. Monitors and regulates the operational parameters of the Chicago waterways system. Issues guidance to operational teams for the management of water discharge at key facilities, ensuring effective flood control and maintenance of safe operational levels.

Additional Responsibilities

Initiates repair processes or investigations in response to failures, breakdowns, or emergency situations. Acts as a guide within the Waterways Control Room. Collects and disseminates relevant information regarding District operations, incidents, and weather conditions to appropriate authorities. Performs other assigned duties as necessary.

Work Environment

Typical office setting, utilizing standard office equipment and computer systems.

Qualifications

Completion of high school education or equivalent, along with seven years of experience in electrical operations.

Substitution Policy

Additional relevant experience may be considered in lieu of the required educational background on a year-for-year basis.

Promotional Criteria

Minimum of one year of experience with the District in roles such as Power House Dispatcher, Chief Electrical Operator, or Electrical Operator II. Possession of civil service status in one of the aforementioned classifications.
