About the Opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a seasoned Cultural Resources Principal Archaeologist/Manager to join our Pacific Northwest team. Our accomplished environmental and cultural resources scientists are growing, and we're looking for dynamic professionals who share our passion for delivering high-quality cultural resources compliance services.

Your role will involve working closely with office staff in business development, drafting proposals, overseeing team procedures, developing and leading projects, managing fieldwork, assisting with logistics, analyzing results, and preparing technical reports. As a key member of our team, you'll play a crucial role in shaping our cultural resources compliance services.

This permanent, full-time opportunity reports to our Portland, OR Cultural Resources Team Lead. The position can be based in one of our Pacific Northwest offices (Corvallis, OR, Portland, OR, or Whitefish, MT). Candidates local to the region are strongly preferred.

What You Will Accomplish
  • Serve as primary or co-author on large technical reports, research designs, and other technical documents.
  • Conduct content edits of technical reports and site forms.
  • Oversee field research, data collection, inventory, analysis, and final report production, ensuring these tasks align with our QA/QC plan.
  • Assist with training and mentoring staff in topics such as NRHP eligibility, research design implementation, technical reporting, and cultural resources recording protocols.
  • Take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to ensure tasks are completed effectively.
  • Comply with SWCA and client safety programs and assist in developing such programs.
  • Maintain good working relationships with state and federal agency contacts and clients.
  • Additional project management duties as needed: manage budgets, prepare proposals, interact with clients, and manage staff.
Experience and Qualifications for Success
  • A master's degree in Archaeology or Anthropology.
  • A minimum of ten years of supervisory and fieldwork experience, with academic or research-oriented supervisory experience substituting for a portion of compliance-based experience.
  • Experience applying for state-issued excavation permits in Oregon, Washington, Montana, Alaska, and Idaho.
  • Experience with and thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations for cultural resources compliance projects in Oregon, Washington, Montana, Alaska, and Idaho.
  • Experience with content edits of reports and background in scheduling and budgeting of projects related to cultural resources.
  • Demonstrate completion at a PI level of a minimum of one testing or data recovery excavation project involving primarily archaeological investigations and preparation of final reports consistent with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation.
  • Listed as a Registered Professional Archaeologist or qualified for RPA status.
  • Prioritized publication record and conference presentation experience preferred and supported in this role.
  • Ability to work independently and oversee small or large projects by collaborating with Field Directors and Project Managers.
  • Ability to travel an estimated 10-20% of the time when necessary.
Salary and Benefits

An employee in this Portland, OR-based position can expect an annual salary between $92,230.32 - $120,349.32. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
