Plumbing and Mechanical Inspector

The City of Flint is seeking a highly skilled professional to ensure the safety and compliance of plumbing and mechanical systems in our city.

Job Summary

Inspect plumbing and mechanical activities to enforce safety regulations and assure compliance with all applicable City and State codes and regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough inspections of plumbing, cross-connection, sewers, and mechanical installations to ensure compliance with approved materials and accepted practices.
  • Inspect plumbing and sewer installations, alterations, and repairs during construction to ensure compliance with applicable City and State codes.
  • Verify compliance of gas and oil-fired appliances with relevant codes and standards.
  • Witness tests of completed installations to ensure compliance with plumbing and mechanical codes and standards.
  • Document defective materials and workmanship, issue orders for correction, and conduct re-inspections to ensure compliance with code requirements.
  • Verify state and city contractors' licenses for compliance with state law and city ordinances.
  • Provide guidance to plumbing and mechanical contractors, builders, and the public on the interpretation of plumbing and mechanical codes and acceptable installation methods.
  • Prepare and maintain necessary records and reports, conduct correspondence, and issue written violation notices and court appearance tickets.
  • Review and issue permits for plumbing and mechanical installations and activities as required.
Requirements
  • Two years of full-time paid work experience performing plumbing work at journeyman level or possession of a valid master journeyman license.
  • Four years of experience in the HVAC field as defined in the Forbes Mechanical Contractors Act.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in the installation of plumbing equipment.
  • Knowledge of plumbing and mechanical regulations enforceable by the State and City Ordinances.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and explain plumbing and mechanical codes related to State and Municipal regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to read and understand plumbing and mechanical plans and specifications.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with contractors, journey workers, and the public.
Necessary Special Requirements
  • Must have possessed a Mechanical License for not less than 1 year in 3 or more categories 1, 2, 4, or 9 as defined in 1984 PA 192, MCL, and known as the Forbes Mechanical Contractors Act.
  • Must register with the State of Michigan within 30 days of employment or be registered as a Plumbing and Mechanical Inspector by the State.
  • Possession of a State of Michigan Plumbing (Journey/Master) License.
  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan Driver's License.
