Job Summary

We are seeking a highly qualified and dedicated Special Education Teacher to join our team at The Grosse Pointe Public School System. As a Special Education Teacher, you will play a critical role in providing specialized instruction to students with individualized education programs (IEPs) to help them progress in the general education curriculum.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and provide specialized instruction to students with IEPs to help them progress in the general education curriculum.
  • Accept full responsibility as the case manager for students with IEPs and oversee their compliance.
  • Determine instructional needs of students based on assessment data and district curriculum, and provide direct and/or supplemental instruction to students.
  • Ability to participate in and support functional behavior assessments, the development of behavior intervention plans, and the implementation of positive behavior interventions and supports.
  • Use technology to enhance instruction and increase student independence.
  • Develop and facilitate timely Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, maintain service logs and documentation of student progress, and communicate regularly with students and parents.
  • Develop and provide academic instruction, behavioral supports, remediation, and guided practice using instructional objectives and lessons.
  • Collaborate with general education staff to promote students with IEPs achieving IEP goals and meeting curriculum expectations.
  • Model professional and ethical standards when working with all stakeholders.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with parents, staff, other school district personnel, and community services agencies.
  • Maintain effective and timely written and oral communication with parents, staff, and other professionals.
Requirements
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with endorsement in at least one area of special education.
  • Experience in working with students with disabilities.
  • Experience in supporting core content and providing accommodations.
  • Knowledge of positive behavior interventions and supports.
  • Competency in the administration and interpretation of academic ability and achievement assessments.
  • Skills and abilities to develop and promote positive relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to cooperatively participate in Child Study Teams, evaluations, and IEPs.
  • Knowledge of all areas of eligibility and ability to work effectively with students in all areas of eligibility.

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout school and classroom.
  • Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at a time.
  • Must be able to assist students who have physical difficulties.
  • Occasional bending, kneeling, sitting, standing, and climbing stairs.
  • Prolonged periods sitting and working on the computer to complete necessary paperwork.
