Job Summary

Coastal Villages Region Fund is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mate to join our team on a Freezer Longliner. As a key member of our crew, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the vessel, as well as supervising and disciplining the crew.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safely navigate the vessel when the Captain is not on duty
  • Assist in conducting safety drills and maintaining a safe working environment
  • Supervise and discipline the crew, ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures
  • Manage shipyard work, loading and unloading supplies, and performing other duties as required
  • Maintain accurate records and reports, including government reporting requirements
Requirements
  • Current USCG License with STCW endorsements
  • Minimum of one year experience as Mate of a Freezer Longliner in the Bearing Sea fishery or three years as Mate on another Bering Sea commercial vessel
  • Minimum of two years experience as a deckhand or bosun on a commercial fishing vessel
  • Ability to work 12-16 hour shifts, variable shifts, and up to 24 hour shifts as required
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and cramped environments
Working Conditions

The work is strenuous and sometimes hazardous due to exposure to operating machinery, mechanical parts, fumes, chemicals, pressurized fluids, vibration, and extreme weather conditions.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand, walk, and maintain balance in rough seas or other types of weather
  • Ability to grasp, hold, or grip rope, rails, equipment, and vessel structures for frequent periods of time
  • Ability to occasionally sit, kneel, crouch, and crawl
  • Ability to lift 11-20 pounds from the floor to the waist and above the shoulders, and on a limited basis, lift 50 pounds in the same manner
  • Ability to push, pull, and carry 11-20 pounds, and on a limited basis, 50 pounds in the same manner

Selection Process

Selected applicants will be required to successfully pass a post-offer background, drug test, and reference check. Applicants must be willing and able to be away from home for extended periods of time and work in a cramped environment.
