Job Title: Hospital Leader On Duty

Job Summary:

The Hospital Leader On Duty is responsible for providing exceptional veterinary care to our hospital patients and delivering outstanding customer service to their owners. This role represents the mission and values of Petco to all pets and pet parents, setting the tone for technical and customer support partners in the hospital.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet clients and patients, obtain vital signs, and record in the electronic medical record.
  • Assist doctors with appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia, under supervision from the veterinarian and veterinary technicians.
  • Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications, and maintain the electronic medical record.
  • Monitor and answer telephone lines, route calls appropriately, schedule appointments, provide client education, and relay test results to doctors and clients.
  • Help prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, assist doctors and veterinary technicians in anesthetizing patients, and maintain patients safely under anesthesia.
  • Under supervision, perform in-hospital treatments for sick patients, including giving injectable and oral medications, and intravenous fluid therapy.
  • Train new staff members and disseminate knowledge as required.
  • Keep the hospital environment neat and clean, perform regular cleaning, and assume tasks such as inventory ordering and scheduling.
  • Monitor wait times, make accommodations during peak times, and uphold and enforce all policies of Petco and Vetco Total Care.
  • Oversee hospital operations and supervise paraprofessional staff.

Requirements:

  • Preferred: at least 1-year experience working in a veterinary practice or sufficient experience to ensure excellent performance.
  • Leadership capabilities, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and compassion and sympathy.
  • Telephone and computer skills, and a willingness to learn new techniques and treatments.

Work Environment:

The majority of job duties are conducted in the Veterinary Hospital, requiring bending, kneeling, lifting, and standing for long periods. Direct contact with clients and their pets is a significant part of this role.

Contacts:

This position will regularly communicate with clients, service teams, and management in both Vetco Total Care Hospitals and Pet Care Centers.
