Job Description

The Texas Animal Health Commission is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Field Veterinarian to join our team. As a Field Veterinarian, you will be responsible for administering animal health programs in assigned counties, overseeing veterinary activities and disease control functions, and coordinating with Livestock Inspectors to conduct testing and other program activities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate and administer Livestock Inspectors engaged in conducting testing and other animal health program activities.
  • Design and implement herd/flock plans in accordance with policy.
  • Communicate with herd/flock owners to determine the extent of index herd/flock and/or adjacent herd or flock testing.
  • Assign follow-up tasks to supporting Inspectors and complete herd/flock management documents.
  • Continuously re-evaluate affected herds/flocks to ensure proper disease management practices are employed.
  • Provide procedural assistance and training to Livestock Inspectors for collecting and submitting test samples.
  • Perform emergency management response and other emergency management-related activities.
  • Conduct epidemiological investigations and interpret test results.
  • Deliver group presentations on animal health programs and maintain a positive presence in the local animal agriculture community.
  • Act as the public liaison with industry groups.
  • Submit routine reports and complete special reports as directed.
Requirements:
  • License to practice veterinary medicine in Texas (or ability to qualify for license within 1-3 months).
  • USDA Veterinary Accreditation, Level II in Texas (or ability to qualify for accreditation within 1-3 months).
  • Certification as a Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician (FADD) within the first year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Large animal and wildlife experience.
Working Conditions:

This position requires the ability to work in all types of environmental conditions, travel extensively within Texas and occasionally outside Texas, and work occasional overtime and non-standard work hours.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of veterinary medicine principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of regulations, policies, and procedures related to the agency's regulatory activities.
  • Knowledge of livestock industries in Texas.
  • Skill in the use of a computer.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to plan, implement and direct all aspects of animal health programs.
  • Ability to work in all types of environmental conditions.
  • Ability to travel and adjust work hours and schedule to meet workload priorities.
Physical Requirements:

This position requires the ability to handle and inspect livestock and exotic livestock, harvested deer, and other species, and to lift up to 50 pounds.
