The Manager Nursing will be accountable for the unit area 24/7. Key responsibilities include providing leadership and communication, monitoring the work environment, ensuring quality, managing the fiscal budget, managing human resources, and delivering competent clinical practice.

Responsibilities

Nurse Manager for a 10-bed Medical ICU Unit (7 South-3), responsibilities include:

To succeed in this role, we require:
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a Nurse Manager role or equivalent management experience.
  • Prior Nursing ICU experience is preferred.
1. Support and actualize the Division of Nursing philosophy and goals by assuming leadership in program development and implementation.
2. Develop staff to assume leadership roles both formally and informally, via role modeling and facilitating staff participation in shared governance structures.
3. Facilitate problem-solving and development of effective communication channels to provide information to all staff members, holding at least one unit meeting per month with posted minutes and notice.
4. Direct and participate in the orientation of new employees, evaluating programs' effectiveness and employees' progress.
5. Maintain a positive working relationship and problem-solving with other members of the patient care delivery team, including physicians and other departments.
6. Participate in committees and task forces as indicated.
7. Facilitate staff to assume leadership roles.
8. Demonstrate positive leadership skills and communication that embraces change, resulting in achievement of outcomes.

9. Staff actively participates in clinical decision-making affecting practice.
10. Promote a caring, helpful environment, including the arrangement of the physical setting and assembling equipment in a manner conducive to effective and efficient nursing care.
11. Participate in unit, service, and divisional CQI/CQE programs, documenting results, reporting by deadlines, and formulating corrective action plans for improvement.
12. Meet established research-based standards of care, quality control targets, and operationalize CQI.
13. Develop a multidisciplinary program to monitor quality patient care indicators.
14. Maintain the fiscal budget within established variance, focusing on labor costs, overtime, orientation costs, SSP costs, and medical supplies.
15. Adjust staffing patterns according to unit activity and patient acuity.
16. Review fiscal worksheets, analyzing variances and implementing appropriate action plans.
17. Develop and manage the unit budget to control operational and capital expenditures for capital equipment priorities based on patient unit needs and according to budget policy.
18. Share leadership in place with structured recruitment and retention and PEP/professional practice.
19. Facilitate professional growth and development of staff utilizing career development plans, identifying staff career development and training needs, and using CQI/CQE and staff input for development of educational programs.
20. Demonstrate accountability for human and material resource management with division guidelines and standards, monitoring, correcting variances for productive and non-productive utilization.
21. Comply with personnel policies and procedures, following guidelines and conducting effective performance interviews, job standards are understood by employees, etc.
22. Direct and participate in the orientation of new employees, evaluating programs' effectiveness and employees' progress.
23. Participate in an innovative program (pilot study, research project, etc.) that has an effect on patient care within the past year.
24. Participate in a professional organization (i.e., specialty or administration).
25. Maintain clinical exposure through actual intervention, coordination of patient care, role modeling, consulting, problem-solving, and in-services.
26. Ensure the effective delivery of competent, compassionate nursing care based on social, psychological, developmental, and spiritual needs of patients as demonstrated by patient care outcomes achieved through established standards of care and by patients' and families' perception of care.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

*Bachelor's Degree and Registered Nurse

For leadership roles, new hires should have:
Bachelor's Degree and minimum of 3 years leadership experience required; clinical leadership in the discipline preferred

OR

Master's Degree and no experience.
