Job Summary

Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago seeks a highly skilled Senior Staff Accountant to join its Finance Office team. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing student account data, reconciling general ledger accounts, and performing other related tasks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and record journal entries for month-end close, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Manage student account transactions, including miscellaneous charges, student billing, and fees, to maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Prepare monthly general ledger account roll-forwards, reconciliations, and analyses, including bank reconciliations, to ensure financial accuracy and compliance.
  • Follow up on outstanding issues and work with the team to clear reconciling issues, ensuring prompt resolution and minimizing financial risks.
  • Ensure timely distribution of monthly departmental reporting, providing stakeholders with accurate and reliable financial information.
  • Prepare work papers and assist with the compilation of financial statements for the annual audit, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Follow up on accounts receivable collections, as necessary, to minimize outstanding balances and optimize cash flow.
  • Manage corporate credit card expenditures and follow up with employees on unrecorded charges and other issues, ensuring responsible use of company resources.
  • Manage the preparation of periodic tax filings, including 1099, 1098-T, and 1042, to ensure compliance with tax regulations.
  • Assist with accounts payable, as needed, to ensure timely payment of invoices and minimize financial risks.
  • Assist in ad hoc projects, as assigned, to support the Finance Office team and contribute to the success of the organization.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or significant accounting work experience, with a strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Independent problem-solving and time management skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, with intermediate skills and the ability to analyze and present complex financial data.
  • Substantial experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge, with a preference for candidates with prior experience working in higher education.
  • Knowledge and experience with Raiser's Edge would be a plus, but is not required.
  • Prior experience working in higher education would be seen as an asset, but is not required.
