Electronics and Mechanical Engineering Specialist

This role is integral to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. The selected candidate will act as a technical expert engaged in the development of instrumentation, overseeing, coordinating, and providing engineering guidance to scientists involved in the research and development testing and evaluation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

Key Responsibilities
This position is being filled under the authority to expand direct hire for certain personnel within the Department of Defense. As an Electronics and Mechanical Engineering Specialist at the GS-0801/0830/0854/0855/1550-11/12/13 level, your typical responsibilities may include:
- Designing and executing instrumentation strategies to support R&D testing and evaluation, which includes the creation and deployment of diagnostic systems for various applications.
- Managing systems such as high-speed data acquisition and environmental measurement tools (e.g., pressure, temperature, displacement).
- Implementing modifications to instrumentation plans based on technical discussions with the Test Team and senior engineers.
- Integrating project changes identified during team meetings and directing contractor personnel regarding policies and diagnostic plan execution.
- Supervising contractor personnel in the design, installation, maintenance, and operational validation of systems like Digital High-Speed Cameras and Data Acquisition Systems.
- Monitoring overall costs and schedules for assigned testing projects and ensuring all diagnostic systems are properly calibrated and maintained.
Travel Requirements
Travel may be required for temporary duty assignments, potentially up to 60% of the time. A valid driver's license is necessary.
Work Schedule
This is a full-time position. Candidates must be registered for Selective Service if born after a certain date and must be suitable for Federal employment, as determined by a background investigation. The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret/SCI Security Clearance is required.
Qualifications
To qualify at the GS-13 level, candidates must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level, including:
- Expertise in engineering and scientific principles relevant to WMD testing.
- Proficiency in computer programming languages (e.g., C++, JavaScript, Python) for data acquisition systems.
- In-depth knowledge of electronic systems and a solid understanding of related electrical and mechanical systems.
For GS-12 qualification, candidates should have similar experience at the GS-11 level, with responsibilities under closer supervision. For GS-11, candidates must demonstrate knowledge in engineering and scientific principles applicable to instrumentation planning for DoD R&D test programs.
Education Requirements
A bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent education and experience is required. Professional registration or licensure is preferred.
Additional Information
This position is eligible for telework and requires consent to pre-employment drug testing, with periodic random testing thereafter. Candidates must provide transcripts or documentation to support educational claims.
