Job Summary

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago seeks a highly skilled Maintenance Laborer to join our team. In this role, you will perform a variety of heavy manual labor tasks, working in a fast-paced environment with a focus on safety and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform heavy manual labor tasks, including cleaning and preventive maintenance on equipment, landscaping installation and maintenance, and repair and maintenance of pavement.
  • Inspect assigned tools and equipment, checking for proper operation and availability of accessories, and perform routine minor maintenance for safe operation.
  • Operate power tools and equipment, such as electric pumps, drills, and fans, and utilize a variety of equipment, tools, and materials as needed.
  • Enter and exit manholes, sewers, below ground structures, and openings, and perform various location-specific functions related to facilities and ground maintenance and channel and dock maintenance.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and other personnel to coordinate and carry out assignments, and take prompt corrective action as needed in response to emergency situations.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and understand simple instructions at approximately the sixth grade level.
  • Possession of a valid Illinois driver's license.
  • One year of service with the District as a Maintenance Laborer B, or civil service status as a Maintenance Laborer B.

Working Conditions

Typical duties involve exposure to industrial equipment or operations, including working near operating mechanical equipment and loud noise. Work may be performed in a variety of weather conditions, including confined spaces or at heights, and may involve contact with hazardous or toxic materials and exposure to noxious odors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some knowledge of basic hand tools and ability to use them in making simple repairs.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to make basic decisions regarding safety and the completion of work tasks.

Physical Demands

The physical demands of this position include lifting and moving heavy objects, working long hours while standing, and operating power tools and equipment. The ability to work in a fast-paced environment is essential.
