Job Summary

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting high-quality blood and other specimens from patients of all ages. This role requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize collections and deliver samples to the laboratory within a timely manner.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform phlebotomy procedures, including bleeding times, blood cultures, heel sticks, venipunctures, capillary blood gases, finger sticks, and cord blood gases on all appropriate age groups.
• Perform secretarial functions, including greeting and admitting customers, answering telephones, verifying and ordering laboratory tests, and reporting lab results by phone and fax.
• Collect drug screens and breath alcohol collections for medical and occupational requests.
• Prioritize collections according to urgent requests and deliver samples within an appropriate time frame.
• Instruct patients and families on proper collection of stool, urine, and sputum specimens and explain blood collection procedures to patients.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Medical assistant or phlebotomy certification preferred.
• Experience as a phlebotomist in a hospital setting preferred.
• Skilled at customer relations and excellent communication skills.
• American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS.
