Role Summary

The Lactation Consultant will report directly to the supervisor of the Birthing Center and will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of breastfeeding support for mothers and infants. This role collaborates with the healthcare team and operates within the professional scope defined by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Deliver personalized lactation support through consultations.
  2. Provide evidence-based care and resources to support breastfeeding patients.
  3. Assist with breast pumping, pump operation, and breast milk collection and storage education.
  4. Design and gather quality metrics for continuous improvement initiatives.
  5. Collaborate effectively with the pediatric care team on care and discharge planning.
  6. Develop and implement lactation program classes for community support.
  7. Conduct follow-up calls and postpartum consultations as necessary.
  8. Mentor staff and provide educational resources for the unit.
  9. Offer team support services and demonstrate technical skills in a cost-effective manner that enhances satisfaction for the team, physicians, and patients.
  10. Complete and maintain all required yearly competency assessments and mandatory training within specified timeframes.
  11. Regularly attend unit meetings.
  12. Exhibit the ability to remain calm and productive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  13. Adhere to patient confidentiality standards.
  14. Support and promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.
  15. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Must be an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) at the time of hire, with a minimum of two years of experience working with breastfeeding mothers and infants as a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) or registered nurse.
  2. If not IBCLC certified upon hire, must be actively pursuing certification within one year.
  3. Must hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  4. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member and communicate proficiently.
