Job Title: Registered Nurse I

This is an entry-level position for Registered Nurses (RN) who are new graduates or have minimal RN experience.

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services supports individuals by promoting recovery, self-determination, and wellness in all aspects of life.

DBHDS operates 12 facilities: 8 behavioral health facilities for adults, a training center, a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, a medical center, and a center for behavioral rehabilitation.

State facilities provide highly structured, intensive services for individuals with mental illness, intellectual disability, or need substance use disorder services.

DBHDS is committed to a life of possibilities for all Virginians.

This position will work at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, a 72-bed Joint Commission accredited State Mental Health Facility, located in Danville, VA.

Registered Nurses are also responsible for safely implementing the use of Seclusion/Restraints including knowledge of physical/emotional risk factors of the patients served at the facility.

Positions are available for night shift (two 12-hour shifts from 7:00 pm - 7:30 am and two 8-hour shifts from 11:00 pm - 7:30 am).

This position may be required to work overtime.

This position will work weekends on a rotating basis.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successfully complete BLS, Therapeutic Options (TO) and other required training upon employment at facility.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills, team-focused care, and a professional approach.
  • Displays the ability to plan, implement, and evaluate care utilizing knowledge of pharmacology, psychiatric, and physical disorders, and cultural needs of the individual psychiatric patient.
  • Presents good clinical knowledge and resources to staff.
  • Ability to delegate, supervise, evaluate nursing processes to help solve complex problems.
  • Current and in good standing Registered Nurse license to practice nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or license eligible; multi-state compact endorsement is accepted.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience as a Registered Nurse in a psychiatric, healthcare facility, acute care, long-term, or correctional setting.
  • Veterans and people with National Service.
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English.
