Equipment Specialist

The J.M. Smucker Co. is seeking a skilled Maintenance Technician to join our team. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of our equipment and facilities.
Key Responsibilities- Equipment Ownership: Own and manage mechanical and electrical equipment in your assigned department, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
- Loss Prevention: Identify and drive out losses (failures and breakdowns) within equipment and departments, minimizing downtime and improving overall productivity.
- Process Understanding: Develop a thorough understanding of all inputs and outputs to your department, enabling you to make informed decisions and optimize processes.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with operating technicians to ensure seamless workflow and efficient use of resources.
- Training and Development: Train and develop technicians on operations and maintenance skills, promoting knowledge sharing and expertise within the team.
- Permit Management: Sign permits for hot work, line break, and confined space entry, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
- Operational Support: Provide backup and fill-in support for operational roles as needed, ensuring continuity of operations.
- Plant Safety: Participate in Plant Safety Systems, promoting a culture of safety and well-being within the organization.
- Change Management: Contribute to Change Management and Plant Improvement Systems, driving continuous improvement and innovation.
- Training and Improvement: Continuously train and improve within your department, cross-train with other maintenance resources, and stay up-to-date with industry developments.
- On-Call Support: Provide on-call support to ensure off-shift operations run smoothly and efficiently.
- Process Improvement: Provide input to team leaders on mechanical and electrical efficiencies and effectiveness, driving process improvements and cost savings.
- Unit Operations: Develop a thorough understanding of all unit operations in the Industrial area, enabling you to explain form and function.
- Equipment Operation: Qualify to operate all production equipment and systems, ensuring seamless integration with other departments.
- Training and Development: Meet with Education & Training Coordinators to understand Plant policies and systems, ensuring compliance and best practices.
- Troubleshooting and Repair: Troubleshoot and repair electrical, instrumentation, controls, and mechanical systems, including:
- Power distribution motor control centers (MCC)
- Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) / Human Machine Interface (HMI)
- Variable Frequency Drive / Servo Drives / Instrumentation
- Ethernet Controls / Networking / Switches
- Motor Starters / Input Output (I/O) Systems / AC / DC Voltage
- Steam supply and condensate return systems
- Centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps, valves, piping systems
- Gear boxes, bearings, shafts, mechanical seals
- Shaft packing materials
- Hydraulic lifting and rotational systems
- Heat exchangers and condensing equipment
- Positive Attitude: Exhibit a positive attitude, eager to teach and learn, and behave as a role model for Mechanical, Electrical, and General Plant Safety.
- Quality Systems: Participate in Quality Systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.
- Communication Skills: Exhibit strong communication skills, able to communicate effectively with all members of the Plant.
- Troubleshooting Skills: Exhibit strong troubleshooting skills, able to identify and resolve complex issues efficiently.
- Documentation Skills: Display strong documentation skills, able to maintain accurate and detailed records.
- Technical Expertise: Display technical expertise in hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop tools.
- PM Completion: Demonstrate PM completion, tracking, and developing skills, ensuring equipment is properly maintained and up-to-date.
- Flexible Work Schedule: Be willing to work a flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, as needed.
- Education/Experience: High-school degree or equivalent is required; a two-year degree or technical degree is preferred.
- Other: Minimum age of 18; at least five years of previous manufacturing / technical experience OR a technical degree is required.
- Communication Skills: Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, GMP's and general instructions, as well as carry out both oral and written instruction.
- Teamwork and Problem-Solving: Work consistently with a team and demonstrate conflict resolution, problem-solving, time management, goal setting, priority setting, and process improvement.
- Flexible Work Schedule: Be willing to work a flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, as needed.
The physical demands described below represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions and duties of this job.
- Required to stand and lift frequently.
- Required to use hands and arms for reaching/handling purposes.
- Required to stand and walk at minimum 70% of the time.
- Must be able to work 12-hour shifts.
- Must be able to work any shift (day or night) including weekends and holidays if a business need arises.
- Must occasionally lift/push/pull or carry up to fifty (50) pounds and should be able to lift 30-35 pounds on a frequent basis.
- Must be able to squat or kneel and to bend on a frequent basis.
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to food allergens.
- Must be able to climb steps on a frequent basis as well as stand on or move around on platforms, equipment, and concrete floors.
