Seasonal Position - Highway Maintenance Technician

Department of Public Works - Right of Way Maintenance Team

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Starting Salary: $15.09 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY

This role involves active participation in the upkeep and repair of county highways.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Engages in various labor-intensive tasks to maintain and repair county highways.
  • Fills potholes with asphalt; levels and smooths asphalt surfaces.
  • Clears vegetation from rights-of-way.
  • Picks up litter and debris along roadways.
  • Directs traffic at work locations.
  • Utilizes a range of machinery, tools, and vehicles; ensures cleanliness and maintenance of equipment.
  • Operates various hand and power tools.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Completes other tasks as assigned by management.
  • In emergencies, all employees are deemed essential and may be required to perform different duties.

SUPERVISION

The Crew Supervisor provides work assignments based on general instructions and reviews completed tasks for adherence to procedures and accuracy.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include county policies and procedures, which are generally clear but may require interpretation in specific applications.

WORK COMPLEXITY AND SCOPE

  • The role involves related maintenance tasks. Adverse weather and heavy traffic conditions add to the complexity of the position.
  • The objective of this role is to assist in the maintenance and repair of county highways, contributing to safe and well-maintained roadways.

  • Interactions are primarily with colleagues and the public.
  • Contacts are typically aimed at resolving issues and providing services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, walking, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy items, uses tools requiring dexterity, and distinguishes colors.
  • Work is conducted outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather conditions. Employees may encounter noise, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Protective equipment such as masks, goggles, and gloves may be necessary.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Experience sufficient to understand the fundamental principles related to the primary duties of the position, typically gained through an apprenticeship or similar role for one to two years.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
