Position Summary:

The Survey Technician plays a vital role in land surveying activities, executing tasks as directed by the Survey Manager. The work performed is typically reviewed upon completion to ensure alignment with organizational objectives, policies, and procedures. The position allows for flexibility in selecting methods and procedures, prioritizing tasks, and coordinating projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engages in the pre-planning and post-planning phases of data collection utilizing Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and other computer-based systems for establishing boundary locations and survey markers in accordance with Public Land Survey System (PLSS) standards.
  • Collects data through the operation of survey instruments, making observations, and preparing documentation of topographical features and as-built plans, while interpreting maps and specifications.
  • Maintains accurate records, sketches, maps, reports, and electronic drawings of surveys to accurately represent the work completed.
  • Identifies survey areas, locates markers, and sets benchmarks while keeping a detailed record of these activities.
  • Calculates and converts survey data to create maps for distribution using AutoCAD and Civil 3-D software.
  • Prepares and submits technical reports and maintains records in both manual and digital formats.
  • Ensures the security and confidentiality of information encountered during the performance of duties.
  • Interprets legal descriptions and maps to support survey projects.
  • Performs additional job-related tasks as assigned and contributes to team objectives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Understanding of relevant federal, state, and tribal laws and regulations.
  • Proficient in principles and practices of land surveying, mathematics, and physical sciences.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering concepts and terminology related to land surveying.
  • Ability to utilize various computer-based resources in surveying tasks, including CAD/CADD and GIS software.
  • Skill in interpreting engineering plans, maps, and survey notes.
  • Competence in preparing and analyzing operational reports.
  • Strong customer service skills for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, and make informed recommendations.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Capacity to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel within the internal boundaries of the Nation.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree in a relevant field and two years of experience in a related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OR

  • Five years of relevant work experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • A criminal background check is required upon recommendation for hire.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license may be necessary, with no major traffic violations in the past three years.
  • Must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation's insurance requirements for operating program vehicles.
  • Fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English may be required based on departmental needs.
