Job Title: Financial Director

Join the National Domestic Violence Hotline team as a Financial Director, where you will play a critical role in shaping the organization's financial strategy and ensuring the effective management of its resources.

About the Role

The Financial Director will oversee the daily financial functions of the National Domestic Violence Hotline, including budget management, cost-benefit analysis, forecasting, fiscal reporting, audit compliance, and managing financial and programmatic reporting for government contracts and private grants.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the finance team to oversee day-to-day financial operations, including accounting, payroll, and financial reporting, ensuring compliance with US GAAP standards and maintaining internal control systems for revenue, expenses, and budgets.
  • Lead the organization's budget management, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives through effective cost-benefit analysis and financial oversight.
  • Support the CFO in preparing and delivering accurate financial reports to the Board and internal stakeholders, ensuring transparency and clarity in all financial matters.
  • Complete the yearly budget process and ensure its integration with long-term financial planning.
  • Lead the fiscal year's closing process, ensuring all financials are accurate and ready for audit and reporting purposes.
Audit & Compliance
  • Coordinate and lead annual audit processes, ensuring that FY 2024, ending in September, is closed on time and that the audit, starting in December, runs smoothly.
  • Manage financial compliance for government contracts, private grants, and internal policies, ensuring adherence to all regulatory requirements.
  • Manage relationships with auditors and tax preparers, ensuring efficient coordination for audits, tax filings, and the annual Form 990 submissions.
Grant & Program Financial Management
  • Oversee financial management and reporting for all government contracts, grants, and program budgets, ensuring compliance with grant requirements and accurate tracking of program-related expenditures.
  • Ensure expenditures align with grant conditions and collaborate with program leadership to manage effective program cash flow and financial planning.
  • Apply for competitive grants on a five-year cycle, ensuring submissions meet funding objectives and are strategically aligned with organizational needs.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, mentor, and supervise the finance team, fostering a collaborative, high-performing department that meets organizational goals.
  • Participate in the recruitment, onboarding, and development of finance staff, and provide ongoing support, feedback, and technical guidance to ensure professional growth and high performance.
  • Set departmental goals in partnership with the CFO and monitor progress toward achieving these goals, ensuring continuous improvement in financial operations.
Strategic Collaboration & Process Improvement
  • Collaborate with program and leadership teams to enhance financial systems and processes, ensuring they support program effectiveness and organizational goals.
  • Educate staff across departments on finance and accounting procedures, fostering cross-departmental collaboration to improve overall financial operations.
  • Participate in the development and revision of financial policies and procedures in alignment with organizational strategy, ensuring continuous process improvement.
Filing & Documentation
  • Maintain the organization's filing system, ensuring that all financial records are accurately documented, organized, and easily accessible for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead board financial development by ensuring all financial activities and documents are properly recorded and communicated to the board.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.
  • 5-10 years of nonprofit accounting experience, including full-cycle accounting, grant accounting, and management.
  • Experience supervising accounting teams and managing financial functions such as reporting, budgeting, and audit coordination.
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP, financial management, and internal controls.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex financial information to various stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting software, preferably MIP or Financial Edge (FE).
  • Familiarity with data analytics and experience selecting and overseeing financial software systems.
  • Experience in managing grant and government contract compliance and reporting.
  • Experience leading financial teams through a system migration or new system implementation.

Working Conditions
  • Hybrid role, based in Southwest Austin, requiring two days per week in the office.
