About the Role

The Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Pilot provides critical aerial survey support to United Utility's clients, utilizing LiDAR, thermal, and RGB methods. This role requires extensive travel, with occasional overnight stays in assigned work areas. A clean driving record is essential, and will be thoroughly vetted during background checks. Under the direct supervision of the Field Survey Supervisor, the UAS Pilot will collect data from transmission and distribution power lines, poles, and related equipment. The incumbent will capture essential images, including pole framing, attachments, conductor sizes, and other equipment, to support visual details in GIS mapping. The UAS Pilot will process all collected data and publish it to the SharePoint platform for client access. Additionally, the pilot will be trained to map the database using collected data during periods of low client demand. This role may also involve training in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) as a secondary function. To be eligible for this position, applicants must hold a Remote Pilot Certificate (sUAS Part 107 license).

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct pre-flight checks of drone and equipment
  • Experience with FAA regulations, including COAs, COW, LAANC, and other requirements
  • Establish two-way communication with tower personnel
  • Oversee ground and flight operations
  • Analyze weather forecasts to ensure safe flight conditions
  • Plan, request, and execute flight routes
  • Gather required information, including photographs, thermal imaging, LiDAR, and other data, using various drones
  • Ensure compliance with all FAA regulations and certifications
  • Read and manipulate GIS maps, clean up client GIS databases
  • Travel to client-owned areas as required
  • Utilize detailed distribution maps provided by clients
  • Employ a computer tablet and related applications to survey poles for correct framing, conductor sizes, and other equipment
  • Collect data using range finders, measuring wheels, communication sticks, multimeters, and other field equipment
  • Responsible for quality control/quality assurance on project deliverables
  • Utilize GPR devices for underground utility locating (pending training)
Key Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Transmission and Distribution experience essential
  • Knowledge of field work techniques and data collection using drones
  • Able to create and read detailed distribution maps using GIS software, and take detailed field notes for data collection and transfer to the computer
  • Experience with GPS to document features, work locations, and transects
  • Able to use a Tablet/PC and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Adobe Pro)
  • Able to write work summary reports using Microsoft Word
  • Able to take pictures of poles and identify framing and equipment on the poles
  • Experience with cameras and range finders
  • Ability to represent United Utility in a professional manner
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain it throughout employment
  • Ability to work in a team environment with a high attention to safety guidelines
  • Must be able to work extended periods on a computer
  • Ability to focus on quality and attention to detail, work independently, and think analytically
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills
