Communications Systems Specialist

We are seeking a skilled Communications Systems Specialist to join our team at the City of Reno. This role involves performing a variety of technical functions in the installation, maintenance, and repair of communications equipment and electronic system devices.
Key Responsibilities- Install, maintain, and repair communications equipment and electronic system devices.
- Perform corrective maintenance on base, mobile, and portable radio equipment.
- Program, configure, and align new radio equipment.
- Remove, install, repair, or modify dispatch consoles and peripheral equipment for public safety operations.
- Disassemble and reassemble City-owned vehicles to facilitate the installation of various communication devices.
- Modify, update, and reconfigure existing systems to meet changes in City needs.
- Provide instruction and training to system users in the proper use of communications equipment.
- Maintain an accurate inventory and appropriate levels of equipment, parts, supplies, and other stock items for maintenance and repair functions.
- Operate a variety of electronic maintenance and repair tools.
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in electronic repair, communications technology, or a related field.
- Two years of increasingly responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of communications or electronic systems.
- Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) issued by the FCC.
The work environment is primarily in a shop setting with travel from site to site and to various field locations. The employee will be exposed to radio-frequency electro-magnetic radiation.
The physical demands of the job require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a shop environment, stand or sit for prolonged periods, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist, lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight, visual acuity for repairing electronic devices, distinguish colors, operate motorized equipment, and verbally communicate to exchange information.
