The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) plays a crucial role in delivering nursing care tailored to the unique needs of patients, adhering to the guidelines set forth by the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. This position also involves overseeing daily office operations.
Reporting Structure
This role reports directly to the Operations Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive nursing interviews, assess health literacy, and accurately document findings in patient records.
- Gather essential medical data, including chief complaints, vital signs, and diagnostic results, to prepare for physician assessments.
- Act as a patient advocate, safeguarding patient rights and addressing service-related concerns.
- Facilitate referrals to other healthcare agencies to ensure continuity of care.
- Evaluate patient issues, whether in-person or via phone, providing appropriate advice or referrals to physicians.
- Deliver home care instructions regarding procedures and medications.
- Provide preoperative and postoperative guidance for various surgical and medical interventions.
- Document patient education efforts in medical records.
- Administer respiratory therapies and maintain documentation in accordance with policy.
- Perform irrigation procedures, such as foley catheterization and enemas, while documenting outcomes in patient records.
- Collect and code specimens, including cultures.
- Assist with the application and removal of casts, offering patient education and documenting the process.
- Execute procedures such as catheterization and dressing changes, adhering to Infection Control Policies and recording results.
- Administer medications through all routes except for IV blood products, IV push medications, chemotherapy, or modifying existing IV infusions.
- Support physicians during patient examinations by providing instruments, dressings, and preparing necessary equipment, following Infection Control Policies.
- Orient new staff members to the specialty area.
- Offer emotional support and guidance to patients and their families.
- May participate in the STAT Code Team.
- May serve as a Health Care Assistant in accordance with hospital policies.
- Exhibit professionalism by adhering to performance standards, including dress code.
- Ensure confidentiality for both patients and staff.
- Maintain professional knowledge through ongoing education, reading current literature, and documenting for annual evaluations.
- Conduct pre-certifications and referrals for insurance purposes as needed.
- Coordinate scheduling for procedures and surgeries as required.
- Follow the incident reporting policies and procedures established by Springfield Clinic.
- Comply with all OSHA training and requirements as mandated by policy.
- Deliver exceptional customer service while adhering to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited LPN (LVN) program.
- Eligibility to perform IV therapy upon successful completion of an approved course.
Licensure and Certification
- Possession of a current LPN license in the state of Illinois.
- CPR certification in accordance with American Heart Association guidelines is required within 30 days of hire.
Skills and Competencies
- Demonstrate accountability and responsibility for personal practice and delegated tasks.
Work Environment
- Work is conducted in an office setting during clinic hours.
- Physical activity involves a balance of sitting and standing.
- Minimal lifting is required, with occasional lifting for specific patient populations.
