Position Overview
The Environmental Compliance Specialist II is responsible for updating management plans related to asbestos, assisting in the formulation of abatement specifications, preparing detailed reports, conducting Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) assessments, ensuring adherence to hazardous material regulations, and supporting various environmental initiatives aimed at resolving health-related issues within the District.
Key Responsibilities
- Safeguards public health by identifying and mitigating hazards associated with asbestos, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, pesticides, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, IAQ concerns, and mold in educational facilities.
- Delivers expert guidance to the District on matters concerning asbestos, lead, IAQ, and mold, including conducting building surveys, assessing material conditions, and ensuring compliance with relevant standards and practices.
- Assesses potential environmental remediation projects and assists in the development of plans, specifications, timelines, and contract options for such projects.
- Acts as the District's representative during asbestos abatement projects, ensuring compliance with regulations and specifications, addressing infractions, providing monitoring services, and maintaining necessary documentation.
- Recommends appropriate personal protective equipment for all environmental-related tasks.
- Generates comprehensive environmental reports addressing issues such as underground storage tanks (UST), hazardous waste, PCBs, asbestos, soil contamination, mercury spills, lead-based paints, and public water and sewage systems.
Safety Protocols
- Demonstrates proper handling techniques for chemicals, hazardous materials, and spills.
- Exemplifies safe work practices, particularly when working at heights or in confined spaces.
- Conducts preventive maintenance on tools and equipment, ensuring they are in safe working order.
- Adheres to established safety procedures and techniques, including safe lifting and climbing practices.
- Identifies and rectifies unsafe conditions in the workplace, promptly reporting any issues to a supervisor.

- Basic understanding of biology, chemistry, mathematics, and other scientific disciplines relevant to identifying and managing environmental health risks.
- Proficiency in technical standards, inspection methodologies, and analytical techniques pertinent to environmental health investigations.
- Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrating tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Ability to coordinate, plan, organize, and lead projects effectively.
- Competence in conducting asbestos sampling and managing mold remediation efforts.
- Capability to resolve environmental hazards efficiently.
- Physical ability to perform tasks related to abatement and remediation, including wearing necessary protective equipment.

Travel Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in environmental sciences, engineering, industrial hygiene, biological or physical sciences, or a related field.
- Certification/License: Must possess a valid driver's license and be insurable by the District's insurance provider. Must obtain relevant certifications within two years of employment.
- Experience: Minimum of four years in environmental-related fields or indoor air quality.
- Additional Requirements: Ability to wear personal protective equipment and work in hazardous conditions.
