Family Law Paralegal Advocate

This role involves working as a staff paralegal in our Family Law Unit to provide compassionate and impactful legal services to low-income clients. The ideal candidate will have experience working in family law, be proficient in Spanish, and possess strong analytical, communication, and listening skills.

Responsibilities- Staff the Compton Courthouse Restraining Order clinic.
- Maintain a caseload of family-related matters under attorney supervision, including cases involving divorce, parentage, child custody, and child/spousal support.
- Work with attorneys to prepare cases for court hearings and administrative support.
- Prepare legal work under the supervision of an attorney.
- Maintain detailed and accurate case notes and timekeeping in case management system (LegalServer).
- Maintain contact with clients, opposing parties, and opposing counsel.
- Prepare and maintain client files, electronic and/or physical.
- Interview clients and effectively communicate legal advice provided by attorneys.
- Assist attorneys with intake and initial client appointments.
- Prepare legal forms, readings, memoranda, correspondence, and other legal documents.
- Assist attorneys with case investigation, witness interviews, factual, and legal research.
- Perform various clerical duties such as record-keeping, document copying, e-Filing, etc.
- Engage in interpretation and translation for attorneys when qualified.
- Work with community groups, conduct outreach, and provide community education presentations and materials.
- Work with a multi-cultural perspective of inclusion and diversity.
- Work with and mentor paralegals and law students, interns, and volunteers.
- May be required to work at clinics and/or workshops located in local courts, CLA SoCal offices, or at partner agencies.
- A paralegal certificate, degree, or bachelor's degree with a minimum of one year of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for at least three years.
- Knowledge of family law is preferred.
- Experience working in a high-volume environment is preferred.
- Knowledge of legal software programs used to prepare California Judicial Council Forms is preferred.
- A valid driver's license, reliable vehicle, active insurance policy, or other ability to travel frequently in and around the service area for representation and to engage with clients and community partners is required.
- Verbal bilingual proficiency in Spanish is required.
- Written bilingual proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
- Strong technical skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams), are required.
The salary range for this position is $22.11 to $33.42 per hour, commensurate with experience. Benefits include comprehensive medical/dental/vision/life insurance, long-term disability, and supplemental insurance. Paid holidays, vacation, personal time, and sick leave are also included. Additionally, we offer a competitive Law School Loan Reimbursement program and 401k with employer contribution.
