Summary

The Operating Room RN plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth and safe operation of the surgical suite, adhering to strict federal, state, and accreditation standards. This position involves overseeing patient care activities within the operating room, maintaining a high level of safety for both patients and staff members.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive preoperative assessments, review surgeon preferences, and ensure all necessary equipment and supplies are readily available and functioning correctly.
  • Administer medications safely and accurately.
  • Position patients appropriately for surgical procedures, utilizing positioning aids to prevent circulatory, respiratory, and postoperative discomfort issues.
  • Perform meticulous surgical preparation according to established protocols and surgeon preferences.
  • Handle and document specimens meticulously, adhering to established policies.
  • Demonstrate expertise in caring for patients with latex sensitivities.
  • Conduct accurate sponge, sharps, and instrument counts throughout procedures, taking immediate corrective action when discrepancies are identified.
  • Maintain a sterile environment within the operating room, adhering to strict asepsis principles and promptly addressing any breaches in technique.
  • Ensure emergency equipment and supplies are readily accessible at all times.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked surgical suite, free from soiled equipment and supplies.
  • Operate mechanical, electrical, and air-powered equipment according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Utilize knowledge of medical record policies and procedures, actively participating in quality assurance initiatives.

  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and respect.

  • Actively participate in quality improvement processes, contributing to the enhancement of individual and organizational performance.
  • Provide age-appropriate patient care across the lifespan.
  • Report suspected child, spousal/partner, and elder abuse according to established protocols.

Qualifications

  • Current California RN license and BLS, ACLS certifications are required.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience as an operating room nurse is essential.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of regulatory standards governing surgical practices.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency in using telephone, fax, and patient monitoring equipment.
  • Working knowledge of standard operating room machinery, equipment, autoclaves, washer sterilizers, and patient monitors.
