Position Overview

The role involves delivering precise, effective, and unbiased American Sign Language (ASL)/English interpreting services to individuals with disabilities, primarily acting as the designated interpreter for a specific UC staff member. The position also includes supporting the director in ongoing training initiatives aimed at promoting an inclusive and accessible campus experience for d/Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver accurate and impartial ASL/English interpreting services to the university community, both in-person and virtually, across all UC campuses as assigned.
  • Review relevant materials, engage with professors or presenters, and evaluate logistical arrangements for assignments as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the Communication Access Services Program Coordinator to ensure that accommodation requirements are fulfilled for the designated employee.
  • Provide orientation and training on accessibility tools and departmental processes for d/Deaf and hard of hearing individuals utilizing ASL accommodations.
  • Assist the director in the recruitment, selection, and ongoing engagement with contract service providers and external agencies.
  • Adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct (CPC).
  • Offer education, training, and support to faculty, department chairs, and colleges working directly with d/Deaf students, faculty, and staff regarding Deaf culture and best practices.
  • Support the Director of Communication Access Services in designing workflows and processes for service coordination and delivery as needed.
  • Exhibit effective cultural mediation while interpreting in a diverse environment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Associate's Degree in ASL/English Interpreter Education/Training, Linguistics, Education, Communication, or a related field.

A combination of nine (9) years of relevant work experience and/or specialized training may substitute for the educational requirement.

Experience Requirements

A minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience in ASL/English interpreting across various settings, particularly in post-secondary education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), National Association of the Deaf (NAD), and/or Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI).
  • Graduation from an accredited interpreter education program.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Deaf culture.
  • Professional experience serving as a dedicated interpreter.
  • Experience providing interpreting services for a diverse range of identities and in various professional contexts.

  • Competitive salary range of $64,000 to $67,000 based on the candidate's experience.
