About the Role:
The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) seeks a highly skilled and detail-oriented individual to join its Digital and Cyberspace Policy Program as a Research Associate. This exciting opportunity is based in New York, with a hybrid work arrangement requiring at least three days of onsite presence. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Ira A. Lipman Chair in Emerging Technologies and National Security and Director of the Digital and Cyberspace Policy Program.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research on specific areas as requested by the fellow, tracking English and Chinese language news and data sources on technology, innovation, and cybersecurity.
  • Complete writing assignments, including research findings summaries and business writing.
  • Provide administrative support to the fellow, including answering telephones, handling correspondence, and responding to media requests.
  • Coordinate events, preparing invitations, making travel arrangements, scheduling, corresponding with speakers and presiders, helping to prepare background papers and materials for distribution, and providing other logistical support.
  • Assist in managing program finances, including preparing budgets and tracking monthly statements, monitoring grant information and writing reports and requests, creating and updating Excel spreadsheets, and preparing vouchers for reimbursement.
  • Assist the fellow with social media outreach, publishing a blog, website, video, and/or using social media applications as needed.
  • Provide support across departmental lines and for other fellows, upon request.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in International Relations or a related field, with high academic credentials and a concentration on Chinese or Digital and Cyberspace studies.
  • Advanced Mandarin Chinese language skills are required, with the ability to conduct research with Chinese language materials. Familiarity with the Chinese internet, bulletin boards, and social networking sites a plus.
  • One year of related administrative and/or internship experience.
  • Strong research, proofreading, and editing skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience with budget management and/or website maintenance preferred.
