UW Information Technology (UW-IT) serves as the central IT organization for the University of Washington, overseeing strategic planning, management, and direction of the university's IT infrastructure, resources, and services.

Data & Applications (D&A) is the division within UW-IT responsible for managing the university's academic and business systems, productivity platforms, enterprise integrations, learning analytics, and data-driven decision-making, as well as ensuring the accessibility of UW's digital resources.

The Data Integrations unit within D&A focuses on administrative data, leading efforts to integrate data into the enterprise, enhancing the value of UW's data, and ultimately enabling our customers' success.

The Enterprise Web Services and Events (EWSE) team develops and manages business Web APIs, event messaging, and data integration services.

We are seeking a Software Architect Lead who will ensure code quality, conduct code reviews, mentor developers, and oversee the design and development of secure, maintainable, and scalable system integration solutions utilizing Web APIs, event messaging, and integration middleware.

This role also involves providing support and consulting to various university offices, colleges, and departments in application integration and business process automation.

Position Responsibilities:


The successful candidate will join a small, collaborative team that champions innovation and standards in developing and supporting advanced system integration services.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced software engineer or architect who comprehends the fundamental benefits and challenges associated with enterprise application integration.

This position emphasizes the operational health of the team, providing oversight, architectural guidance, long-term support, and delivery across team members.

The candidate must possess technical expertise along with the ability to influence, collaborate, and communicate effectively about complex technical topics and best practices, guiding a spectrum of junior to senior engineers.

In addition to being a strategic thinker and enthusiastic advocate, the candidate should be able to analyze business requirements, design and implement secure system integration solutions, enforce university security policies for data access, and collaborate effectively with other business and technology leaders across the university.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead projects by directing technical activities, requiring the ability to organize and influence individuals without direct supervisory authority.
  • Demonstrate the ability to inquire, understand, and resolve implementation or support challenges while articulating realistic technical solutions to a diverse group of colleagues.
  • Exhibit strong communication and collaboration skills to work alongside colleagues and partners in scoping project designs that align with system development best practices and customer requirements.
  • Commit to maximizing customer value from the software while simplifying complex business processes and streamlining system architecture.
  • Rapidly prototype solutions to demonstrate value, then coordinate with development teams to deliver new end-to-end implementations.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Minimum of five years of progressively complex and responsible experience in the development and support of enterprise applications and services.
Experience in modeling and diagramming complex system architectures.
Project leadership experience.
Proficient .NET developer with recent experience in developing Web APIs.
Experience in cloud application design, preferably with Amazon Web Services.
Recent experience integrating Web applications and services with middleware services.
Familiarity with code versioning, branching, and release methodologies (GitHub, GIT).
Proficient in all aspects of the software development life cycle, including DevOps expertise.
Able to quickly learn and apply new technologies and skills.
Strong focus on software testing and documentation; commitment to quality.
Customer service-oriented mindset with a drive to provide exceptional solutions.
Understanding of secure design and coding practices.
Strong written and oral communication skills and interpersonal abilities.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Infrastructure as Code technologies (Terraform preferred).
Experience in Higher Education, preferably at a major research (R1) university.
Experience with open-source development projects.
Experience with Agile development practices, including test-driven development.
Experience designing and building REST Web services.
Experience with NoSQL datastores (ElasticSearch preferred).
Experience with SQL and query design.
Experience implementing data access and application security policies.
Familiarity with software architecture patterns (e.g., MVC).
Experience with caching and load-balancing.

Work Environment:
Hybrid, open office environment.
